looking for advice on a new notebook...

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop and was just looking on what ideas people had about what kind to get, where to get it from, what specs I should look for and are the most important, etc. I'm looking for a mid to upper level quality - maybe I'd play some higher end games on it. It would also be great to have a DVD burner/CD burner combo. I would also like wireless networking. I'm looking to not spend more than $2000; $1500 would be greatThanks for any help you can offer!

For best value, you could probably spec out a nice 600m with a DVD burner for under $2000.

In terms of absolutely highest quality, you can't go wrong with an IBM ThinkPad. Although you'll be hard pressed to stay under $2000 with the specs you are probably looking for.

If you want to play games, I'd wait until at least june for the $200 centrino price cut, late june/july for the mobility9600/fxgo5600, and who knows when this summer for hitachi to release their 7200rpm notebook drive.

Agree with the Thinkpad.

Compaqs are crap. I've heard surprisingly bad things about Sony Vaios, which is too bad considering they usually make great electronic stuff
