Looking for advice/input on new PC console controller purchase

Hello AT.
It would seem my trusty DualShock 3 has finally taken one too many trips from my desk to the floor and has stopped working. I'm looking at new controllers to replace it. Currently I am torn between the DualShock 4 and the Steam Controller. At the moment I am leaning toward the Steam Controller because new/shiny (to me) although the lack of a D-Pad makes me keep reconsidering the DualShock 4, so feedback about the functionality of said Steam Controller from anyone who happens to have one would be appreciated.
I used a wired Xbox 360 controller before switching to the DualShock 3 and found it acceptable. I was also lent an Xbox One controller by a friend and did not like it, my main issue was the placement of the switches for the left and right bumpers, I am in the habbit of pressing the outer edges of the bumpers which was not easily doable with the Xbox One controller and as a result have no intention to get one.
The main games it will be used with are Dirt Rally, Dark Souls, GTA V (flying only), Elite: Dangerous (menuing/using the galaxy map) and a little bit of Assetto Corsa.
I have a budget of £40-£60 and would prefer to buy from a UK website.
I am open to other makes/model of controller if anyone has any to recommend.
