I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time finding one of these. Basically, I want an extension cord reel that mounts and functions just like one of these wind-up garden hose reels:

What I'm finding:

1. Hand held reels. Similar, but I want it fixed on a side wall in my garage, which I think would make it quicker to unreel and then reel back up again.

2. Retractable reels. A bit more elaborate/expensive than I need and most of them need to be mounted to a ceiling.

$22 shipped:

* Inexpensive
* Hand-crank
* Wall-mount
* BYO cable (75 to 150 feet, depending on cord thickness)

Most of the wall-mount models you'll find are auto-rewind and cost between $60 to $110, which is pretty expensive for something so basic. Grainger has some nice options as well, but they get pretty pricey but they're more industrial. There's a nice 20-foot auto model here for $67 with a light-up outlet tip:

Or one with a triple-outlet head & longer 40-foot cord for $105 here:

You'd think stuff like this would be more popular given how convenient it is, but at least they're more accessible these days thanks to online shopping. They were really hard to find a few years ago when I was looking for a portable rewinder/storage solution for my Walmart outdoor inflatable projector screen!

Also, if you're looking for something a bit more car-oriented, Chamberlain makes a nice unit called the Power Station. It's a ceiling-mounted auto-rewind unit that has a power outlet, LED work light, and 100 PSI tire/ball inflator. $129 at Home Depot, but Amazon has it for $78 shipped:

It's convenient for pumping up your car tires, bicycle tires, sports balls, etc. and also for having an outlet to plug a shop vac into. On that tangent, Home Depot has a neat inexpensive shop vac solution that clips onto their 5-gallon buckets: (lacks rolling wheels like a dedicated wet/dry shop vacuum, but it's cheap & convenient!)

Thanks. I did see that one. Seems like it works OK, but it's a little Rube Goldberg for my tastes and appears to take up a lot of space for all that it does. What's wrong with a simple winding reel with a knob on it?

Right. That's what I said, the mountable ones are all retractable. And most of those aren't designed to be mounted on a wall, but from above, from a ceiling. My garage doesn't even have a ceiling - more of a cathedral ceiling formed by the roof. To mount something like that I'd need to put a bracket on the wall, like you might use for hanging a plant.

Or one with a triple-outlet head & longer 40-foot cord for $105 here:

That one does look like it would mount on a side wall, but the main unit would need to pivot 90 degrees in the bracket, as most often I'll be pulling the cord out of the garage. And yeah, it's pricey.

Oh yeah, one other type that I'm finding are floor mount reels.

I'm getting the distinct impression that manufacturers think the reel types would typically be used by contractors or DIYers who need a portable solution for playing out extension cords.

Yeah, you'd think that something this simple would be common enough to exist...mount it on the wall in a compact manner (instead of sticking out), wind it up like a garden hose model.
