As the topic says i'm looking for a cooler for my graphics card. I can play WoW for a few hours but after awhile the card seem to heat up too much (near 100 degrees +) and my frames drop from 60fps to about 5fps and the game starts crashing on me. Figured a cooler other than the mfr's would help resolve this issue. So any ones you recommend that would work with my card, and instruction tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

before buying a new cooler, make sure your card fan still works

try to reseat the heatsink and apply new thermal paste

dust out the heatsink also

For a good cooler (that you can use on later cards) grab a VF700 or VF900

vf900 and HR03 aren't compatible with that card. The HSI heatsink gets in the way of pretty much every application except for the vf700. Sorry man!

What does it get in the way of? My 6800gt is already pretty beasty and takes up a pci slot. I only need one for my sound card. Would it really take up that much more space or is it incompatible in other ways? Btw I have a full atx board (Asus A8V) and a CM Stacker so space is easier for me. :)

Thye HR-03 says on newegg and on the compatibility list that it's compatible with the 6800gt..

Thats because it is, only the 6600 (GT) AGP were not supported due to the additional HSI bridge heatsink.

6800 was right next to the die so it will work

VF900 and HR03 are good choices if you want to spend that much... HR03 is the top of the town

That's what I was thinking/noticing. So do you think there would be much difference between the VF900 and the VF700? Was looking at the HR-03 but would also need to purchase a 92mm fan.

Edit: I would first try putting some new paste on the fan your have. You know they have a 7900gs AGP for 200 bucks now. Before I put a 50 dollar fan on that 6800 I'd upgrade.

Well the fan could be used on an upgraded card down the road as I will be purchasing a 8800GTX. But I hear ya. I'll try the new paste on my card and see if that helps as it use to not be a problem. Also you pointed out a good...point. Spending $50 on a new heatsink when a $200 big upgrade is right there, doesn't seem very wise. Of course one could look at it like i'm spending $50 to salvage this already plenty fine graphics card and can use the $150 I saved towards the new card on the new setup later down the road...

HR-03 would probably be able to run passive for your 6800GT as long as you ahve adequate case cooling :)

I saw in reviews it was done on X1900XT's which are hot
