and came across a 2009 Honda Fit with 102,500 miles listed for $9,997. A lot of miles for a 2009 but I am thinking it being a Honda, it will last another 100k if it is taken care of. What do you guys think?

Also been looking at older Civics and Accords but the market sucks around my area.

Granted I'm not on the up and up of the values of the fit in particular but IMO $10k for an 'ultra-economy' car with 100k feels like a lot.

Let the wife decide. Provide her with the options to choose from.

Yea if you're spending around 10k for a Fit with 100k miles you're better off buying a Versa. The sedan starts at about 10k I believe.

I recently sold my 2008 Fit with 45k miles for $11,000. You can do better than that for sure.

EDIT: I'll add, when I was buying the car, we were in a similar situation as we are now. The economic downturn had just hit and gas was $4/gallon. Used compact cars at the time cost almost as much as new ones, so I wound up buying a new Fit instead. Less features than a used car, but on the other hand, brand new with a warranty.

I didn't actually like the car though, which is the main reason why I sold it.

When you test drive it, pay attention to high speed gearing. The automatic has a much taller top gear so it actually gets better mileage than the manual. Also pay attention to ride quality.

Another plus to buying now is if you want to unload it in a few years, you'll be able to recoup most of your cash.

If this were Off Topic we would have already been inundated with copycat threads titled:

Looking for a wife to use car

On topic, used car values for recent econoboxes haven't been that great for the past couple years, since the downturn and earthquake. A couple thoughts...

What's the budget? You're within spitting distance already to the super econoboxes, and that's a new car with near zero miles and full warranty.

Do involve the wife in the car search. She'll appreciate it even if she's not into cars.

This is the garage. We flush the unmentionables back to OT and rise above here.

I agree with everybody else. 10k for a high mileage Honda may be book but there are too many Korean alternatives that are brand new for a little more.

I traded in a 2009 Yaris with only 50k miles for about $8,500 or so. Granted, it's cheaper base than the Fit, but it has half as many miles and was in perfect condition. Do not buy this fit.
