I've noticed that there is starting to be a lot more DVD players that can play DivX files. Several of them can also read DivX/music/pictures from a USB device. A few can even do HD res DivX files.
I'm looking for a unit to play and upconvert standard DVDs, play high res DivX files (other formats would be great, like h.264 or mkv) from either a DVD or from a USB connected hard disk, has HDMI or DVI output, and is relatively cheap.
The closest things I've found are these:
I-O Data AVeL Linkplayer2, which is an older unit, seems to do everything except it only has component outs... maybe not a big deal.
Buffalo PC-P3LWG, also an older unit, seems about the same as the above unit. Lots of reviews about using it for streaming, but not much about just using a hard drive. Discontinued now, so no more firmware updates.
Helios X3000/X5000
Looks interesting, but the manual states the limit for DivX and XviD files is 2GB. Not enough for HD movies. Also must be used in conjunction with a network... no direct USB connect.
INOi MH720
Does not have a DVD drive, so can only be used with files copied from PC. Looks intriguing but not a lot of info available. Unclear if it even plays back 720p files or just upscales lower res files to 720p. Very crude looking OSD too.
I'm sure there are more that I have missed..... I find it strange that nobody seems to want the same thing I want? I'm sure there are enough pirates out there to support this type of device.
For my purposes: I will probably never get a stand alone HD or Bluray unit, but I'm in the market for a drive to add to my PC when the price is right. I will also want to watch those movies on the bigger living room screen though, so ripping them to a hard drive would be ideal. It would also prevent the expensive new discs from being mauled by my sons.
