Looking for a surge protector.

I'm looking for a surge protector for my laptop and some other junk that needs to be plugged in. Any brands I should be looking at? What other characteristics should a surge protector have? Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

A rather old buying guide to surge protectors can be found HERE

I'm partial to APC products, so I'd recommend THIS ONE 🙂

Any suggestions on ones that are not notebook specific? I'm also looking at plugging in my external hdd, (eventually) a printer, and a couple other things.

I'd say almost any brand except Belkin. I got a CyberPower on sale + rebate at BestBuy and it's working fine for me. All else being equal, I choose the one with the highest Joule absorption capacity - at least 1000 Joules. Don't even take the equiment insurance dollars into consideration - they have enough fine print that they hardly ever pay on it, have to take them to court first.

What's wrong with Belkin?

Belkin isn't a "real" company. It's business model is to help big box stores achieve a bigger bottom line - e.g. cables and adapters at jewelry store markup levels. I've got a couple of High Speed USB 2, 10' cables here that I paid $2.00 each for and I'd gladly compare them to Belkin that would go for over $20. in the big box stores. It's not to make quality products that are worth the price asked. Most of their products other than cables and adapters are repackaged, generic junk. Rip open and compare what's inside a Belkin and an APC equivalent item that sell at approximately the same "regular" price. I'd be surprised if Belkin wasn't formed by a consortium of big-box stores strictly for the purpose - do you ever see any other brand of cables there except for the even higher priced Monster?

I'd say stay away from Monster also (as well as their cables). Lots of flash and big numbers with no real justification for a much higher price. I'm partial to APC myself as well.

I've had four warranty claims with APC over the past twelve years or so and they've come thru in replacing the affected equipment every time. 🙂
