Looking for a sub $600 laptap

I'm trying to buy a laptop for my girlfriend and just need something very basic. Literally all she needs it for is email, web surfing, storing music and occasional PowerPoint presentations. (she doesn't want a desktop) Any recommendations?

I have been looking at the Lenovo R60 and R60e models (which start at $600) and the Dell Inspiron 1501 model. (which starts at $500) However, given how basic the needs are, would i be better off gonig to Walmart or BestBuy and getting one of the $400 ones there?

Thanks in advance.

Someone in the GottaDeal forums picked up the Walmart $400 laptop and said they liked it so far. The specs on it look good for office/web use.

Thank you for the replies. Is there a big difference between the C200 and R60/R60e? Why would you get the C200 over the others?

HP is offering this deal for $399 after $100 rebate. I would suggest upgrading to 1GB (add $50) Ram but this will do the job:

Compaq Presario V3000Z
Operating System Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
Processor Mobile AMD Sempron(TM) 3400+ (1.80GHz/256KB)
Display 14.1" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
Graphics Card NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150

Memory FREE Upgrade to 512MB DDR2 (2 Dimm)
Hard Drive 40GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
Networking 802.11b/g WLAN
Primary Battery 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Where is HP offering that?

There is a pretty big difference between the R60 and C200. R60 has all ThinkPad features and is overall a more feature loaded, robust design. The C200 is a pure value machine, basic as can be, but even so has more features than your entry level Dell or HP's. Both machines come with the same 1 year tech support, which is not outsourced. If you can afford the R60, get it. The C200 is still a good notebook, but below that of the R60.

That $400 HP sounds pretty good for the price. I wouldn't bother upgrading the memory, my Sempron laptop has 512MB and it is more than enough for word, internet, etc. Heck, it should be plenty for about anything other than gaming and heavy multimedia (editing large photos, stuff like that).

And if you or your girlfriend is a student you can get the HP for $360.

It will play older 3D games just fine like Age of Mythology or Temple of Elemental Evil

That's a pretty good deal. I'd leave the memory at 512MB (OP's needs won't require anything more) upgrade the battery to the 12cell.

I think the original battery is fine. She'll learn like we all do when & where to plug it in when on the road.

1GB Ram could come in handy when dealing with Powerpoint.
