Looking for a strange item....

Pardon my ignorance... but I'm looking for something for my house. Works similar to a fan controller for your computer, but plugs into a wall outlet in the house. It would run in between the outlet and a fan, and it would allow me to adjust the speed of the fan which is usually not adjustable. Does such a thing exist?

OP,

If you're talking about a standard floor fan or table fan, then what you need is an AC Motor Controller. I'm not sure if a control designed for ceiling fans will work with those other devices. They used to have Triac based motor controls that worked with things like power tools, but I wouldn't know where to find one now - perhaps the tool dept at Sears or one of the big home stores like Lowes or Home Depot. Not sure if they'd work with the type of motor that is in floor/table fans either. Perhaps the store might have a display model that you could try on your fan right there. IAC, I'm sure it wouldn't burn up your fan - either work or not work.

You should not use a resistor!

Most adjustable ceiling mounted fans have rotary switches with tranformers inside. The rotary switch selects which winding of the transformer to use - and therefore selects the voltage.

You should get an electrician to install one of these. If you do it yourself (which is probably illegal) and screw-up you could injure/kill yourself.

EDIT: Here's a photo of one i just got out of the shed. I labeled it and everything 🙂
