Some time ago, in the sixties, maybe.

It's written from the point of view of a farmer just before and during the Communist takeover of China - details how the communists forced industrialized farming on the plots and ended up completely ruining the agricultural process... ?

"The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck?

Not a Chinese author, but it fits the farmer part. I can't remember much else since I read it in middle school, but this was the first title to come to mind.
