I have a Taisol CGK760 with a 4800 rpm fan and artic silver II on my T-bird 1.4. When I built the system I was given bad advice that it would alright to scratch the copper insert when I was removing the thermal pad and consequently I my hsf is not performing well at all, my system idles at 48C and peaks at 59C. I ignored the problem for a while but now that its almost summer I?m going to replace it, and my question is should I stick with the Taisol or is there another high performance/ low cost hsf I should consider, and is there really a tremendous advantage with artic silver over the generic heat pad? I haven?t oc?ed yet, but I?d like to keep it as an option. Thanks for your help.

How deep is the scratch? You can usually lap out smaller scratches in the HSF base.

crap i just replaced my Duron 800 tonight with a Tbird 1100 and I may've scratched my new Volcano 6cu a little too...

(volcano 6cu, btw, is a pretty good heatsink, pretty quiet 30dba, $17 shipped from newegg, my Tbird is running at around 36C after 30 minutes)

It has a copper base too and I used nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol with tissues and paper napkins....took forever to get that stuff off too...i was surprised to see what looked like burn marks on the base after i finished rubbing...i felt it and it seemed like i may have scratched it.....

should i just not do anything unless things start going sour?

what does it mean to "lap out"?

A few things to try before spending any money-
Make sure that the asymetrical clip isn't reversed, the pressure point should be right over the processor die.
Check the temps with the cover off, might just be a case ventilation issue.
Scratches can be removed by lapping the surface with corundum sandpaper on a flat surface, like a formica countertop or piece of plate glass- the super fine grit (1000&up) sandpaper is hard to find, but 250, then 400 grit and then crocus cloth will do a good job.... Move in a figure 8 pattern- easy, particularly with copper, soft as butter......
Do a search for lap, lapping.....

If you decide to buy a new heatsink, have a look at previous threads, there are quite a few in depth ones here regarding HS/Fan recommendations, if you`re on a tight budget, the Volcano7+ is about the best bang for buck, a bit more for the Thermalright AX-7 and Alpha PAL8045 and a lot more for a Swiftech..

There is also a bargain heatsink called a GC68 but I`ve never seen it, I don`t think they`re available in the UK
