Looking for a socket 478 CPU... hmmmm... which one?

My motherboard for my XP1700 shyt the bed the other night and I have a Soyo Dragon 2 V1.0 that I got free from Newegg... so I figured rather than buying a new motherboard for the XP1700 which has a rigged up heatsink/fan, I'd buy a processor for this motherboard and get some use out of it.

I'd like to get a 2.4C but people seem to want $150 for them, and I don't wanna pay that much cause they're just not worth it. I was hoping to be able to get one so I could experience HyperThreading first hand on a daily basis since I've never owned a Pentium 4 before. If I can't find a 2.4C for around $100 I'll probably consider a Celeron.

We have them for $138.85, retail boxed, so you wouldn't need a heatsink/fan.
PIV 2.4 Ghz (retail)

Do you do a lot of multi-tasking? If not, you really won't see much benefit from HT.

Would be nice to get SETI up and running again and not have it effect normal use... also would like it to run cool and quiet as it's in the spare bedroom and I don't really want to turn it off every time a guest is over.

*EDIT* That one you have is a Prescott core, which will be hotter and slower than a Northwood... it's also just a 533 Mhz FSB model. I'd REALLY like a P4 2.4C if I can find one reasonably priced. Been looking through the FS/FT forums for one that's maybe not a good overclocker and nobody wants it...

Ah good point. I'll see if I can track down a C version and get you a link.

Yeah, you found it. I had a number of 2.4C's and I really liked them. I always ran mine above 250 fsb and 5:4 tight timings (BH5) and they were snappy.

Those C's are tough to find now I think. They must have been a limited run or something.

I have ran thru a couple of them (2.4C 2.6C)
Good stuff, extremely easy to OC with minimum (Default) Vcore.
Get some Pc4000 set the Fsb to 250 @ 1:1 and your ready🙂

Better than Intels current line up IMO.

is the 2.4c probably the better Intel chip or the best Intel chip to OC (for northwoods that is not precotts), also what are the maximum speeds those things hit?

Also what is the best mobo suited for OCing when it comes to this chip?

Northwoods topped out at 3.4... or was it 3.6? Either way... they should have just made the Northwood 90nm and left out the extra pipeline stages. Would have been better than the Prescott that only made it to 3.8 before they said they won't be going any further.

ANYWAY... you're not gonna reply to my PM, TStep? 🙂

Hm, I guess it's more than you want, but I have a 3.2c that I wanted to get about $150 or so for...

Well, that's not until I make another $150 so I can finally nail down that 4400+...don't want too much downtime you know 😉

Why do you not take a Prescott 3.0+ and forget OCing. the 775 socket P4s are getting sold cheap as they are in abundance and the 2.4C is out of production, therefore overpriced, and a replacement part.

the 1mb cache is better performing----I had them both

You don't read well do you? I have a socket 478 motherboard I got for free that I'd like to use... so socket 775 is out of the question. Prescotts are out of the question as well because Northwoods perform better at the same speed until you get to around 3.6-3.8 GHz. Northwoods also run cooler. I also never said anything about wanting to overclock... I DON'T intend to overclock whatever processor I get at all.

Yaaaaa right... I can't believe you are even thinking that!

You will get that 2.4C, find out it does 3.2+ on a little voltage and run SETI all night long..

OVERCLOCK IT!!!

I might overclock it to see if it feels any more responsive... but it's not going to be my main rig... it's going to be in a spare computer that I only use when another family member is using my main rig for something that can't be done on the spare one.
