Looking for a small home safe

I'm in the market for a small home safe to keep some cash, valuable documents, etc. I'd like it to offer at least some fire protection as well. A digital interface for the lock would be nice, so that I don't have to worry about hiding the key and getting the key every time I want to open the safe. I've looked around at the hardware store and such, but as we all know the best products are often not those on display at your typical B&M. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Costco has a couple that seem pretty nice. They had one in particular on sale a week or two ago that had a keypad and even a fingerprint scanner, and I think it was all of $179.99 or so. I almost bought one myself, but decided that I didn't need it just yet since I don't have anywhere good to bolt it to the floor. My wife and I are looking for a new house now, so we'll probably get one after we move. Our safe deposit box will have to suffice in the meantime.

Beat me to it!

Here is a similiar safe, check your local Sam's Club or CostCo.

I've seen the $179 safe in person @ CostCo B&M and they SOLD OUT within days.

Also the CostCo safe offered 3 kinds of protection IIRC:

Fingerprint biometric scanner.
Keypad combination code.
Traditional lock & key.

All of which can be defeated within 60 seconds using a small crowbar available at your local hardware store for $12.99.

Sentry safes are junk as far as burglary protection is concerned and their fire protection is nothing to write home about either. About all these are good for is to keep your kids, family, neighbors, etc out of your personal effects. A locking desk drawer is almost as secure.

Do you have another suggestion?

Depends on what you want to spend.

Nothing in the price range mentioned in this thread is going to provide any real security.

Would you agree that it'd be better than nothing though? I'm not looking for Ft. Knox security here, just a relatively safe place to put some stuff. It's just as much to keep things private as it is to keep them safe.

what if the battery runs out?

I have an older Sentry safe with a keypad. If the battery fails, it will reset to the factory default code when the battery is changed. If you get a Sentry, don't lose the code because they charge $25 for the code.

We got a used safe from a local safe company. Around 2Wx3Hx2D (feet) but so damn heavy I can barely move it by myself. Built it into a little hole in the wall, and it is bolted to the concrete floor.

I think we paid $200 for it.

Thanks for the ideas. Is there any reasonable way to install one of these home safes in a finished basement? i.e. I have access to studs and exterior walls (behind drywall) but I don't want to go ripping up any carpet to get to the concrete floor.
