Looking for a Set of Docs that describe how to implement a fault tolerant work scheduler

I need to write and setup a highly available fault tolerant redundant task scheduler in C++/Java that implements some sort of election algorithm, i realize this a pretty common task but i want to make sure i am addressing all the major points so if you guys know of a book or a set of research papers that would be good to read before i go designing one myself i would really appreciate it.


if you don't have any idea of what i am talking about at least give me a bump.
