Hey AT,

I'm looking for a web design/development firm to build an app for my startup. Our idea is pretty fleshed out, and we have v1.0 code to work from, though we really would like a total redesign/rebuild from the ground up.

Experience with social applications and PHP is preferable, as well as excellent design skills. Budget is around $10,000.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Honestly you can't get much built by any professional firm for $10k. You'd spend that on the ramp-up :).

You could hire a good guy at $50-75/hour, and get up to 200 hours of time. Figure what you can accomplish in five weeks and see if you think it's enough.

If it were me I'd spend $5k on coffee, soda, and snacks and not leave the office for a couple of months. If the principals don't have the technical chops, consider offering equity to someone who does. The other $5k I would spend on travel/presentations.

What's a more reasonable cost estimate? Are firms that would do it for this kind of money not really worth it in the first place?

$40k - $50k for a basic application/website usually is a good start. It really depends on the complexity of the application along with other factors. You can easily spend a lot more.

Agreed. For an interactive site with social networking features built from the ground up six figures is easily reachable.
