Looking for a replacement for a Jeep Grand Cherokee

Friend's mom is getting a new car pretty soon and I'm looking to help out.

She presently drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee V-8. She would like something that:

1. Is not a Jeep (issues of cost/maintenance)
2. Comparable size to the Grand Cherokee
3. Not terribly expensive
4. Able to traverse some rough/bumpy roads heading to trailheads (she enjoys hiking and needs something that is capable)
5. Has some oomph. She enjoys the get up and go of the v-8 jeep.
6. Gets relatively decent gas mileage
7. Slightly boxy but not a honda element.

Haven't been following new cars recently, suggested a Ford Escape and Subaru Forester. Forester seemed a decent prospect to her but saw a review on cars.com that talked off mediocre offroad performance.

So, any ideas? Favorites? Models you hate?

I would suggest a new Nissan Pathfinder, fits almost all those descriptions except #6 and possibly #3 (don't know price range you are talking about)

Or possibly an Xterra, very good for offroad and a little less expensive

Nissans are excellent cars too! BTW...it's going to be hard to find something that's good at offroad stuff and gets decent gas mileage.

Jeep Liberty Diesel wouldn't be bad...and you just can't beat Jeep for offroad - they excel at that.

Well I'm biased because my parents both have nissans.... (99 Pathfinder and 04 murano)

We were looking at the Liberty Diesel, very nice car and good gas mileage (for an SUV) and awesome towing (3500 lbs!), but not all places have diesel fuel

Yeah I'm biased - 97 Maxima...got 120,000 miles on it and still going smooth. Haven't had to fix much of anything on it.

And Jeep...well that's an acronym for "No curb too high" 😉

I read in Off Road mag that the Liberty Diesel was the best Liberty Jeep had made. Very capable, and considering it's size it was great off road. Mileage on the diesel engine wasn't bad. I don't remember the specs they kicked out, but the article made me consider getting one (I was looking at the time....). I ended up getting a Grand Cherokee, and have had nothing but problems!! :disgust:

I like the Nissans, I may trade my GC in for one....
