I have this Silicon Image raid on my Gigabyte 7N400 Pro motherboard but I've heard that the Silicon controllers are the worse you can have and I didn't want to risk using it.

I have two 500gb SATA and I just need to mirror raid them.

What pci raid controllers would you suggest for a price around $100?

Also, I was wondering if I do use the raid controller on my motherboard, and some how the motherboard dies, do I need the same controller to get my raid back or can I use a different one?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think you should go ahead and use the on-board controller, just make sure Gigabyte has the SATA part of its BIOS up to date with the latest available. You can always get an add-on card with Silicon Image logic (less than $20. shipped from most online resellers) if the on-board one goes out and be able to continue on without a hitch.
