I want to set up a NAS, must be rackmountable, supporting up between 8-16 TB of my own choice of SATA HDDs.

But I don't want it to come with its own software as I want to install FreeNAS myself on it.

Is there anything like this? A simple chassis with computer built in (motherboard, CPU, RAM, CD drive or USB CD support so I can get FreeNAS on it).

how many U? you can get a 1U and fill it with 2TB or 3TB drives and get 8TB or 12TB respectively.

Their are some pre-built ones around, but generally not cheap.

Far cheaper to buy a case and fill it with what you want in terms of PC parts. But you will be looking at a 3U or 4U unit to use standard power supplies IIRC. If you want a small 1U or 2U case, then power supplies get expecive for what you get.
