Anyone have any advice? It'll be running Linux, hence the nVidia preference.

quiet, or silent (as in, no noise at all, passive cooling)? How much money do you want to spend? what apps will you be runing (gaming, workstation, photo)?

He is using Linux so at most the gaming he will be doing is quake 😛

The low level sparkle cards should do they are silently cooled etc etc : -

PCIe - GeForce 6200 TC SP-PX44DT128A sparkle

Silent would be nice but I'll settle for quiet. I'd like to stay below the $300+ range if possible. As mentioned, it'll be on a Linux workstation so I can't imagine I would need that much 3D power. That sparkle link looks like a possibility.

Well, I can't find anyplace that sells the Sparkle, but if I google for 6200tc I get a few hits. Looks like the price can't be beat, but the Quake3 performance leaves something to be desired. 😉 On the other hand, there are modded 6800s that go for $400... http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/cust6800pcie.html. But that's probably a bit more than I'm willing to spend. The search continues....

I really hope you meant DoomIII, my radeonVE could run quake 3 with all the bells and wistles, but then again, can linux run doomIII anyway? Or am I just ignorant?

Get a card with passive cooliing. Or get whatever card you want and change the cooling device that came with it.

Gigabyte 6600 passively cooled. 8 pipes, 450 mhz, and silent... loved mine could play anything out (except FEAR) @ 1280*1024 at some decent framerates (including Doom3).

Note that on the following video card, it?s recommended to change the heatsink anyway. (They say in reviews the stock one is flimsy.)
X700 Pro $90 US

Zalman silent VGA heatsink $25 US

Yes, you can run Doom3 on a Linux box just fine. Although, I don't think that's what the OP is looking for.

Thanks all, I ordered the AOpen 6600. 😀 I guess "passively cooled" is the key phrase to search for in the future.
