looking for a quiet cdrom or dvd drive

From what I've seen, DVD drives are usually quiter than CD-ROM drives.

My old 2x DVD/24x CD Toshiba DVD drive is whisper quiet, all my CD-ROM drives (5 different ones) that are faster than 4x sound like helicopters!

For the quietest and FASTEST Cd-rom, get the Kenwood 72X TrueX drive. It has a seven beam pickup which allows it to spin much slower than the average 52X CD-Rom, yet in all benchmarks it gets an average read spead of over 66X over the entire disk surface (most 52X cdroms rate in the low 40s) Truly an impressive dirve. You have to try it to believe it. A little pricy though around $130.00 Have seen them around 100.00 though. I have the 62X same drive but a little slower. I love it, never seen anything like it.

Good Luck

DID I MENTION IT IS QUIET! YOU CAN'T HEAR IT SPIN UP OR DOWN! NO SOUND.

(sorry for the reemphesis, I just highly recommend it)

I have used a half dozen or more CD-ROM drives and the best and quietest by far is a Memorex I got at Staples for $19.95 after a rebate.

Hammer:

It really depends which model you are getting. I owe three different Memorex 48x drive. One from last summer, run quiet and smooth. It breaks down after few month of use thou. I got another one which run so loud when start, I sold it. I got into the same Staple deal you have with $19.99 after rebate. This time it's even louder. I gave up and brought an Acer 50x instead.

I heard Memorex don't make their own product. They use some other OEM vendor drive.

I changed my DVD Pioneer 10x for a Toshiba 12x, and I must say the Toshiba is Much more silent than the Pioneer, maybe one of the most quiet drives I've had... The pioneer sounds like an airplane is atking off in your room! I hated it during silent scenes in movies...
