Looking for a project.

I have a few machines on my home network and figured I should get them all crunching.

Now here is the problem. I am only on a modem connection. So I need a project that the client can run with out much if any server contact. And then (if the WUs are large) allow me to take it over to a friends how on my notebook and unload on his DSL...

Anyone?

D²OL should also work since it can cache up to 2000WUs and even with a 2Ghz processor it would take a week to exhaust.

And (shameless plug) Lifemapper could work since it can cache up to 200WUs. However they could be exhausted in under three days since each WU is small.

Folding@Home can cache up to 8 WUs if you run in "gah" (Genome@Home) mode, which isn't really Genome@Home, but gives you work units without a deadline. However, you can't really dump all the machines onto one laptop and upload elsewhere, so F@H might be a no-go if that's necessary. 🙁

I will have to be able to upload from my notebook. 🙁 My modem connection is just too slow.

As for D2OL I don't know of a way to easly upload from my notebook.

I am going to look into Dpad and find a drug.

Thanks. 🙂

I believe with both TSC and D2Ol you have to copy a folder over from one install to another and restart the program

md5crk can run without server contact until you are going to dump. I've had machines off my network for a week or so without dumping. But it's one of the smaller projects the team is working on, so there are others that are probably more worthwhile. 🙂

Hmm I will look into md5crk and see how it looks.

The one other problem I have with D2OL and TSC is that the WUs I need to download for each machine are pretty big... I will see if I can setup some sort of script to automate some of the work..

The wu for TSC is pretty small, like <5kb/wu. Takes <15min on my XP2600 to complete a wu and you can cache up to 2000wu. This is a very worthy project and you can get more info on it here. 😀 Plz ask if you've got any more questions. 😉

Seventeen or Bust has very small "work units", the data it sends per WU is very minimal, and can go quite well without an active internet connection for up to a month! (The units "time-out" after a month if there is no progress reported to the server, but they don't need to be completed, they just have to report back). Ken_G6 has even made a SBProxy program, which you can run on your internet-connect machine, and can be a central store/send point for all your clients. It also has the ability to be able to cache more work, and you can tell it to dump as/when YOU want it to.

Your help will really be appreciated in SB, and it's a great project that has shown positive results, having found 6 of the primes already, one by our very own Sean (although he seems to have gone AWOL recently 🙁)
