My girlfriend's brother is looking for a good web filter to have on their computer. They use to pay $5/month to have their ISP filter all the bad stuff, but they switched to broadband and can no longer get that filter.

They are currently looking at this one. The price doesn't bother them, they just want that something that works.

Anyone have anything better?

you cant block a teenage boy from porn. this is a scientific law. your porn filter will make him adapt to new ways of finding porn.

Do you really trust a site with a bunch of random keywords at the bottom to generate traffic? :|

thier is no way to block porn...its just to easy to get too...the most you can do is block the website itself but then I can just use a proxy to get to it or use one of the website translators to act as a proxy

doesn't america online have some parental controls? I would think with their user base they'd be pretty effective in blocking out each separate site.

Will take continual effort by some-one to maintain, however, initially, get a list of porn sites via name and IP and then modify the Windows host file to redirect them to nothing (127.0.0.1). You are treating those sites as if they were spam ad sites.

As long as the kid does not have or is prevented access to the host file you can then use the history to update the hosts file wheneveer needed.

I think that the porn sites have to also have linkages to software that can do blockage.

This was reported in the news when there was the flap over child-access in Congress.

As a former underaged teenage porn-freak, I can tell you that websense is the ONLY thing that will actually stand in our way. There is NO FVCKING ESCAPING a properly configured Websense server - and I've devoted the first 17 years of my life to it. Now that I'm 18, of course, I may as well give that up. AFK, going to the mall and buying some porn.

maybe the best solution is instead of a filter get logging software and just oversee their kid's traffic. Boo-ya for active parenting there.

I always thought you were older.

But what you say does have some truth in it.

There is VERY little that will stop those inclined to find it.

If they want porn, they'll find porn, maybe insist on watching them, or some shit. If not, abandon all hope, or just restrict access manually (passwords etc).
