I'm looking for a piece of technology "furniture" to spruce up a dual-monitor desktop. Instead of having both monitors permanently fixed in location on my desktop, I envision there being some platform device with rails that I can slide left or right to center either monitor directly in front of me as I do different applications on them.

For anyone wondering real-world application, I have a 22" widescreen LCD and a 20" normal LCD. If I want to watch TV, I want to slide the 20" to the center. If I want to play games or surf, the widescreen. If I want to multitask I can have them both somewhat centered...

Anyone have any leads? I'm wondering if this is a custom job.

I imagine a couple VESA arms could do the job pretty well. I'm not sure about a sliding rail system, but I have no doubt there's something out there than can do what you want.

You might get some other ideas going to AVSforum.

Monitor arms would work but not as nicely I think. If what the OP is talking about actually exists, it would not only be functional, but look nice as hell too :)

I actually wonder if this exists too. It would not only work for what the OP is proposing, but also if you have two or three different "stations" you want your monitor to be at. For example, a steering wheel station, keyboard station, and joystick/flight station. You could easily move the monitor in front of each station so you are directly facing it instead of having to turn your head.

Intersting notion. Another simpler approach would be to leave the stations in place and get a nice chair with wheels and slide yourself back and forth. Motions and positions are relative. :)

Well, that would work - but you'd still have to have your chair at an angle. I was thinking of being able to have a completely straight-on view from the chair, to the "station" to the monitor.

I'm no statistician, but it seems like there's a few people interested. May be a market if someone knows a carpenter or metal-worker-guy.
