Looking for a passive CPU cooler.

I currently have a Thermaltake Tsunami dream case (yeah that old one).

Anyways still have the two original 120MM fans running it. And a Volcano CPU fan.

Well it's loud. I was hoping to go look for a passive CPU cooler.

So far I've found the Thermalright HR-01 and the Coolermaster Hyper Z600 on google.

As for here on the forum, people are suggesting the
Scythe Ninja

I like the Thermal Right because it has a fan shroud that attatches to the HS to my rear 120mm case fan. Which is very convienant.

But are there better passive heat sinks out there?

If anybody has any recommendations I would appreciate it. Also any recomendations for quieter 120mm fans then the stock ThermalTake ones would be appreciated too!

PS: My system is a AMD Athlon X2 4400 S939.

I'm quite happy with the Scythe Ninja, and the included Slipstream fan is very quiet.
I believe there's a Xigmatek one but I forget the model number.

As far as fans go, 120mm Nexus fans, the Scythe S-FLEX or Slipstream series fans, and the Noctua fans are some of the quieter fans I know of.

Compared to any of the Thermaltake Volcano series HSFs, just about anything is quieter. You don't necessarily have to go passive (unless that's what you want). For passive, my vote is for the Scythe Ninja as that has proven itself. I've run one passive on an OVERCLOCKED A64 x2, as well as my current OVERCLOCKED E6750.

For quieter than a Volcano, any modern HSF that uses a 92mm or larger fan should do the trick.

Not wise to try passive cooling on high performance CPUs. There will have to be some airflow in the case that is synergetic with the design of the heatsink. As was written above, there are some very low noise fans out there that could be used to replace the stock noise machine.

lapped True gets my vote.

Had one pulled off at the office. The only fan it needed was the rear to allow a bit of air to pass though the fins.

Just a note, complete passive systems are uber $$$

For 120mm fans you should definitely check out the Noctua NF-P12-1300. They're relatively expensive but they can move a lot of air while still remaining, "whisper quiet."

Do you own one of these fans? I hear they aren't as whisper quiet as they claim to be.

I'm definitly looking for a passive system. Mainly because I want *quiet* as possible. My system is not overclocked. I'm leaving two 120mm fans in there along with my PSU's two fans. The case is very well ventilated. I plan on upgrading to a silent GPU (have a GeForce7800GT right now.) I want to have this thing running 24/7 without drawing attention.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I honestly would have to say nothing is better for passive (still) than a Scythe Ninja. I finally jumped on the bandwagon last week and have my X2 4200+ running passively (an idle temp of 33C and a load of 52C but using crappy Arctic Silver Ceramique). There was a $10MIR a couple weeks ago but I guess that's gone now.

In terms of heat conductivity, the finish on the base just cannot be improved any more. It's a complete mirror finish.

Ok I'm sold on the Scythe Nijna. But which one is it? Is it the SCNJ-CU1000 on newegg?

No, that's the really expensive, heavy, copper one.

The one you should be searching for is the SCNJ-1100P. There is an open box option available on Newegg and I might just get that one soon...

Hmm... I like. I also like the SCORC-1000.

Does the Open Box include the mounting brackets? I don't need the fan. BUt I need to be able to put it into my motherboard. The pictures says that it Open Box does not include any of the accessories.

Small caveat on the ninja, If you get the newer revision, the push pins are a nightmare on a really heavy and big hsf like this one, the bolt on kit is well worth it for these. I run one on an old box, the fins are so sharp they can easily cut the crap out of your hands. I bled so much the first time I almost went to get stitches.....

I own a few of them, including two mounted push/pull on my Q6600.

They are indeed very, very quiet. Much nicer than the Yate-Loons they replaced.

You can also look at lower speed Scythe S-Flex's. Consider investing a fan controller as well, that can really knock the noise down.

Alright guys just ordered it along with two scythe 600RPM fans.

If it even halves the noise in my case I'll be happy.

Now I just need an awesome Passive graphics card to replace the aged 7800GT.

ECS makes a passive 9600GT and 8800GT.

Not sure how good the quality is on the ECS 9600GT but I've been looking into that card too...
