What would he use it for? Knowing that might help narrow the field. I bought one for my own father this christmas, and his requirements were pretty similar to yours: basically, just keep it simple. But he participates in a lot of outdoor activities - camping, fishing, and especially hunting. So I wanted to get him something that would let him really 'reach out and touch' the stuff he was shooting.
Ended up getting him a
Panasonic DMC-TZ3. Strictly a point-n-shoot: no user-reachable settings (aside from the usual ISO, contrast, and sharpness) other than white balance. Not exactly tiny, but not much different from, say, Canon's A-series in terms of size. But, where those A-series have 3x,4x and occasionally 6x zooms, this camera incorporates a 10x, optically-stabilized lens. And it backs out to a 28mm-equivalent field-of-view at the widest, where a lot of cameras stop at about 35mm.
