I'm trying to find a Notebook computer with a geforce go 6 series card and a wxga screen 1280x800. All of the rest i'll configure, Why do so many notebook manufactures use small screenss with really high rez screens? (1900x1200 etc)

Higher resolutions look better.

Yes but I can't play 3d games at a decent speed at those high resolutions, plus everything looks smaller, sounds even worse on a 15 inch screen.

well, the 6800 ultra should handle those high resolutions pretty well.

Also, for games, you can lower resolution. Higher resolutions look better in non-game usage too. :)

Pictures, icons, text, etc. all look smaller at higher resolutions. And if you scale down the resolution on an LCD panel to play a game, everything gets fuzy, since LCDs don't scale well. Lots of people will say that you can't notice the difference, but that's on account of a non-discriminating eye. It's like high quality audio equipment....if you can't tell the difference between a high end Denon and a Technics receiver, then your ignorance is your bliss.

I've had high-res panels and low-res panels (1280x800), and I like low res much better. Yes, every now and then I wish for a little more deskspace, but with the high res panels I always wish things were bigger.

With a 1900x1200 display, you can't, for example, hold the laptop on your lap and read this post without squinting. Unless, of course, you scale up your windows fonts and then everything looks like crap.

I loathe high-res panels.

You could always make your own laptop.. Not too many "gaming" notebooks use low res screens..

I believe Asus has a 13.3" notebookw ith 9700 graphics..

Yes but isn't buliding your own notebook much harder than building your own desktop?
I've heard that it's hard to find compatible notebook parts, I just buy a laptop but it's hard to find one with a res of 1280x800 and a geforce card.

Any reason for the GeForce graphics? The MSI MS-1029 is Turion 15.4" machine with 128MB X700 and is VERY well priced. Otherwise, check out Toshiba's 14" GF Go 6600 model.

I've also been looking for a nvidia laptop that uses a AMD 64bit processor. I need nvidia because ati drivers suck for linux.

Right now there's only two that I know of. Both $2-3K+ DTR's; one from Voodoo and one from Rock Direct

Inspiron 9300 with WXGA screen

256MB Geforce 6800go, 1440x900 resolution. High enough to be sharp and easy to read, but low enough so games don't chugg

The geforce graphics are just a prefrence, I've had two ati cards and have had plenty of trouble with the cards drives and ati's tech support team (they usually send me a page with common fixes :( the models of ati cards I owned were a 4mb ati rage2c (it came with a computer I bought in 98 so I can understand not finding newer drivers for it) and my current card is a radeon 9200 with 128MB ram. Please speak up if you think my problems with Ati card are just bad luck or if the Ati cards in notebooks are much better.

P.S keep sending me links for notebooks.

ATI has a great lineup of mobile GPU's these days and driver problems are a thing of the past. Seriously consider the MSI MS-1029, Acer Aspire 8103/8104 (Pentium M X700), Acer Aspire 5020 (Turion X700, if it EVER comes to the US), and a few others that I'm blanking on

Maybe if you can spring a decent amount of cash you could go with the Dell PrecisionM70. It costs a little more but the screen runs native at 1680x1050, it weighs ~7 lbs, nice and fast, and the QuadroFX Go1400 is pretty much an underclocked 6800. I've posted 3k on 3DMark05 w/ a laptop thats not meant for gaming. :)

I'll check out your recommendations, are you associated with the laptop logic website fbrdphreak?

I've found barebones laptops(Msi,asus etc) but the biggest problem is seeing who sells them.

I don't know how good they are, but www.rjtech.com specializes in selling barebone systems. Their featured Intel laptop has an MXM nVidia 6600 card, so it's upgradeable. On the side panel, it says "Asus Z81Sp Coming soon." That one will have an MXM nVvidia 6800.
