Crapzilla...

I'm sorry!

I mean Clonezilla...

It runs off of a live Linux disc, so it doesn't matter what OS you're running - as long as you can boot off a CD/DVD! ;)

If its Ultimate (and some other flavors) then full disk imaging is included in the backup application within Vista...

Don't wait long. But, for the future, if you have more than one PC in the home/office, consider setting up a Windows Home Server.. It makes automatic daily backup images of all your PCs and automatically manages them to give you a wide variety of restore points. I've used mine several times to move images to larger hard drives or to clone my drives. It's simple and fast.

It's nice not to worry about how to restore a PC if something goes wrong, and no need to spend hours making a backup before doing something risky.

Get the 15 day trial of Acronis true image. Fully functional and works great.

Another vote for Acronis true image, been using it for years, worth the $$ and has saved me on multiple occasions.

I was just reading my eMail and...

I noticed that Newegg is running a special:

Acronis True Image Home 2009 (dvd)
Your Price: $34.99 (normally $39.99)
With Promo Code: EMCBCBBCC
$14.99 After $20.00 Mail-In Rebate

The interesting thing is... it's only has a 3-star rating!

Hrm...

That's how I would rate Clonezilla and it's *freeware*. ;)

EDIT

To be fair, I just checked the rating - there were only 2 reviews - 1 guy loved it - 1 guy hated it...

First rule of Newegg club is never talk about Newegg club, second rule is always take the ratings with a grain of salt, most time's it kids that don't even own the product.

I used this when I got my new drive, but I didn't see a way to backup just one drive, so I had to do both of them. What did I miss?

It now says if a person bought the product or not! Though I agree with your second rule still.

That's an improvement, but I guess I thought it was well known not to always trust the reviews over there.

Youre right. The C drive is always included. Ive always used file by file backup for storage so not sure if theres a way around this. For C drive image, Vista is superior. For storage drive, looks like you might need Acronis or Ghost.

Although, I believe using something like winrar, you can archive your entire drive. Although not an image per se, you could simply rar the entire drive contents. Maybe that would work? But thats a seperate thread. The OP was for the C drive, in which case Vista's imaging is superior.

I have recently started to check out Clonezilla. I successfully created, then restored from a disk to disk clone of my laptop's 160GB Vista Home Premium x64 HD on the first try. However, on my first try creating, then restoring from an NTFS image of my boot partition on the same machine, Vista would not boot-up once I had restored. I was about to try using FAT32 instead of NTFS for my image, as Clonezilla gave me a warining saying that using NTFS was experimental, but would probably work (not an exact quote). I am confident once I get some practice, Clonezilla will work great for me. as it seems to for many folks. It should be pointed out for purposes of this thread. that Clonzezilla does not have a particularly easy-on-the-eye UI and would most probably require a little getting used to for a typical Windows user (ie: moi).

I have always used Ghost.. I make bootable DOS images.. but I am ready to give Acronis True Image a try, as I have heard that it may play nicer with Vista than Ghost. Also, you need a DOS floppy to make the restore DVD bootable with Ghost. Your end-user may need a bit of hand holding while navigating through Ghost's UI, too... PLUS Newegg's Acronis deal is making my trigger finger very itchy at the moment.

BTW, I have also heard good things about Drive Snapshot, however, I do not think you can make bootable restore DVDs with it. AFAIK, you have to boot up in DOS first, then run snapshot.exe.
