Looking for a nice LGA775 cooler with NO backplate installation

Hello! I've been looking and looking and can't find anything that seems to fit my needs. Here is what I'm looking for:

A LGA 775 heatsink/fan that isn't huge and heavy
It should mount easily without having to remove the motherboard
It should be decently quiet
It should be decently effective

I'm not looking for an amazing over-the-top performer because those involve using the backplate and all that from what I can tell.

Is there such a beast, does anyone know?

Thanks!!!

I was about to start a thread like this......anyways Does the Artic Freezer 7 match the performance of the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme.......What are the load and idle temps with this cooler................

from what i herd the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Temps at idle of 26 and Temps load at 36.........

I think the general concensus is that the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is the best air cooler available right now, though a lot of people have had problems with the base of the heatsink. The Freezer 7 Pro should be able to cool about 75-80% as well as the Ultra 120 Extreme, but it costs quite a bit less.

The idle and load temperatures HIGHLY depend on the case, overall air flow, ambient temperature, and processor. One person could have load temperatures of 60C with the Freezer 7 Pro. If you used the same cooler in your own setup, you may have load temperatures of only 38C. There are too many variables to expect the same temperatures as another person. The best way to measure is to use a controlled environment and look at a chart of the cooling results - check out Anandtech's cooler reviews. The charts at the end should give you a decent idea of how coolers compare to eachother.

Absolutely not! But, the difference is not that significant.
If you use a quiet 120mm fan on the Extreme, you will not hear it. But, you can hear the Freezer fan at max RPM.

I have seen a system that could overclock an E6600 to 9 X 384MHz with Extreme. The overclock ceiling dropped from that to 9 x 370MHz with Freezer 7.

I do agree there are a lot of variable such as room temp, air flow, case material, change of stock thermal compound to AS5, and now there is that lapping thing...which i am totally not gonna do......i totally agree with you......but i would like to see a b4 and aftr effect of temp with stock HSF and outside HSF on the same comp and average it all....if you know what i mean...........

right now my room temps avg at 35C - 45C......yesterday my CPU cores showed a avg temp of 30C - 33C at idle.....but today after resting my PC for 4 hrs from completing a Prime95 test my Core Temp jumped to almost 36C and was increasing by the hour  (got scared and shut it off)

and i have an Antec P180B case......i even had the side cover out for the heck of it !!!! everything at stock..........

and this is one reason i am looking for a good cooler with moderate price.......

Rash with 95 to 114F room temps your best money would be on AC! How can you even sit in a room like that....

Going to get the Freezer 7 Pro, I read up on it now and it looks like that fits the bill perfectly. Thanks guys.
And yeah, Rash - do you live in a foundry? That's some serious heat in your room!

i hate to bust your bubble.

But a backplate is almost needed for all great coolers. Why? because the torqe the sink will cause can create warpage issues. Also, push pins IMO are terrible. I i try to bolt spring screw every mount possible now.

And even then sometimes on push pins, you need to pull the board out to ensure you have a firm mount. Its very hard to push pin a sink ontop properly without a risk of snapping the board unless you pull the board out.

If your worried about all the sticky backplate complaints, then DONT use the sticky thing. I always leave the seal tape on and never use the sticky. It just takes a bit of aiming to get it mounted correctly.

ohh great !! anyways i want to know those of you wh...use the high-end coolers...how do you place your case.....upright or flat....since i hear ppl a LOT of ppl complaining about how tall it is and heavy ???

The stock cooler is 15.9 ounces (just weighed it).
The Freezer 7 pro is 15.8 ounces.
Thermalright U-120 Extreme, without a fan is 28.3 ounces!

So, I would not worry about installing the Freezer without a backplate.
Granted, the Freezer cooler is taller than the stock cooler. But, most of the weight is in the base (copper), which is located at the bottom right on the motherboard. So, there should not be much more torque than the stock cooler.

The Thermalright cooler, on the other hand, applies too much force and needs a backplate.

Hopefully I emphasized it enough. I thought it was a GREAT idea... until I tried switching coolers. Now I'm in the middle of an RMA, and stuck using older hardware. :(

that stock paste on the AC freezer is MX-1.

Most likely better then what you have on hand, unless your using MX-2 or IC Diamond.

uhhh...

2 yrs ago maybe?

I think the proper order goes as follows.

MX-2?
Shin Estu and MX-1 <--- same stuff
IC Diamond <--- it maybe = or better to MX-1. Cant really answer this question because im still figuring out HOW The hell to apply it correctly. But ive seen its results when applied correctly, and i was like WOW.

Then would come your favorate AS5.

The problem with the stock paste that comes with the Freezer is not the material. It is rather the amount of it. There is too much.

ThermalTake V1 uses pushpins and it holds its own against the Tuniq or Ultra120.

I think the arctic cooler 7 did a better job than my current Ultima 90 in my setup. The only reason I changed is that the fact that the shape/fin structure of the Cooler 7 caused several of the fins to be crushed on one side due to the large northbridge cooler on my mobo. It was an appearence thing, and here I though I would kill two birds with one stone, but nay...the Ultima fits better, but cools worse...in my setup.
