Between the summer heat and dust my 8800GTS OC has been overheating way too much, lookin to ditch it. Anybody have ideas on a card that can maintain a nice cool GPU ?

Wait a few weeks to buy a new one as they will be coming out with a new lineup very soon.

In the mean time, check the airflow in your case. Add a fan or two if necessary.

When you get your next card, make sure that it has a bigger fan and/or heatsink.

Just clean your card and up the fan speed a bit...why spend more if you don't have to...I had a 8800GTS 640 before and it was a fairly cool running card. There are lots of "cool" running cards out there depending on how much noise you're willing to put up with. Or you watercool and get the best of both worlds.

if you want something now, the HD4870 or HD4890 Vapor-X cards from sapphire are both winners as far as cool running goes. the fans on these cards are pretty quiet, so much that you can turn them up to 100% without effecting the noise level much if any. the cooler they come with is top notch as well. with your budget i would get this

I have a Sapphire Vapor-X 4870 2GB, and it doesn't run cool like you'd think it would. At stock and fan @ 40%, it idles ~60C, and it will max (Crysis, RE5 benchmark) at ~80C. 100% fan will drop temps ~5C. Either it got a bad application of thermal paste from the factory, or the non-reference Sapphire card runs that hot and the Vapor-X cooler keeps the temps reasonable, or the Vapor-X cooler just isn't that impressive.

Depends on which cooler is used. The 4870s and 4890s draw about the same power as the 260/275 I believe so they don't actually run any "cooler".
