OK, forget about putting a new cooler on it...instead,

To replace an old AGP GF4 ti4200. Previously considered replacing the cooler, but maybe spend a bit more to replace the entire card? Anything out there for less than $50 that can best this card?

Looking for something passive perhaps or VERY quiet. Pref to spend less than $50.

I have just what you need, in the blister-wrap that has been opened, but it's never been used. I was looking for a cooler for an AGP 7600GT card, and picked it up for [whatever I paid for it] by mistake. My bad decision was born of the fact that I'd grown comfortable using it with my GF4 Ti4600 AGP card on a different machine. I've variously installed the same model in computers for relatives, on a Ti4800, a Ti4200, etc.

There are several different versions of the Zalman ZM80D-HP heatpipe cooler -- lesser versions. They all fit the various GeForce cards. The ZM80D is the best of the lot. I had it on an ASUS 9980 (nVidia) 5950 Ultra AGP card, and I compared it among friends to other VGA coolers -- it was pretty much the best performer among products available in 2004. It kept the 5950 Ultra below 40C when it was getting a workout. To do this, I installed the OP-1 80x15mm option fan, which mounts on top of the aluminum heatsinks attached to the pipes.

Zalman ZM80D-HP heatpipe cooler

The Option fan spins up to some 2,900 rpm, and is pretty quiet at all speeds -- believe it or not. You'd have to get the option fan separately, but they're available and I'm pretty sure they cost less than $10.

Send me a message, and we can work something out. SVC is selling it for $35, and it's yours for $20 plus shipping.

I'd get the heatpipe one and run it without a fan.

I doubt a 4200 puts out enough to overload a powerful heatpipe cooler like that. As long as you have good case ventilation, you should be fine running it silent. I had a 4600 that the fan broke on. Didn't notice till one day I opened the case. No clue how long I ran it without fan, but it obviously didn't need one!

To this day my buddy has that card in his rig, running sans fan and no problems.

OR...would I be better off finding a new AGP card that would best the 4200? Looking for something less than $50 with passive cooling that will outstrip the 4200...

OK, the 6800 looks promising...how about that Sapphire Radeon 9550...is that superior to a ti4200?

The Radeon 9550 is superior to the ti4200, however, the GeForce 6800XT is superior in performance. Whether it's quiet enough for your liking, I wouldn't know.

i don't know much about today's prices, but a 6600gt + some kind of cooler (don't waste your money on anything more than a zalman vf700. cools my 7800gt great.) should do the trick.

Well, it's just a holdover until I buy a laptop later this year (December? January?) The 4200 is pretty loud...so...
