Hey guys I'm looking for a new TV to replace my 27" does anybody know if the Hitachi 42HDM12 is any good, and what would be some other recommendations.

No, it's not a good TV. the 42HDT52 is much better. the HDM12 is totally stripped of all connections (very limited) and the panel cannot touch the panel on the HDT52.

I would not hesitate to go with a HDT52 from Hitachi, but as said by Chiller2, the best bet is to go with a Panasonic plasma (almost anyone in the world will tell you that)
