Go to a real camera store...(NOT Ritz/wolf etc) and look at them there. At the very least check out B&H or adorama if you want a quality tripod....the one you found looks very generic, probably made in China for very cheap.

For a point and shoot nearly anything will work......for an dSLR you will need a much sturdier one.

I'm looking to use it for a Sony F717 and a JVC - GZ camcorder. Problem with my current tripod is that it's very jerky when I go from left to right and you can hear the noise on the recording. I'm looking for something that is smooth. The one I mentioned in my OP is cool because of the "built in" single-pod. I realize that Wolf/Ritz is not preferred by some, but they are around my area and I can see/test the tri/mono pod.

What is B&H? Online?

Quantarray is definitely on the junk end of photographic equipment, but for an F717 and a small / light camcorder, you shouldn't have a problem from a stability standpoint. Smoothness will probably become an issue if it's not an issue at the outset.

B&H Generally very competitive on camera equipment and excellent customer service.

I don't think they make the equipment themselves but rather re-badge others. So you may get a re-badged Sigma.

No, I meant Junk. Even if Quantarray is rebadging Sigma stuff, it's Sigma's craptastic consumer lenses, rather than their EX series lenses, which are really the only Sigma lenses that can be trusted. Those tripods are a dime-a-dozen around Kits/Ritz-style shops all under various names, but none that are synonamous with quality.

For about $100 new, a decent set of aluminum Bogen tripod legs and a pan & tilt head can be had. There used to be a great article about buying a tripod up at Thom Hogan's site (bythom.com). It's probably not necessary for anybody looking to support a small camcorder or a P&S, but it gives one pause when they are just starting out looking for a tripod.
