I'm scracth building a new system, and am soliciting suggestions on a the MB. I need it to have onboard lan, onboard sound, Dual bios, and an AGP slot. Other things like RAID are nice, but aren't neccessary. I'd like to spend less than U$D 100 on the MB, if possible. suggestions?

If you just want speed and reliability, you can probably choose anything with a good rep. But if you want top data integrity as well, there's only one: Tyan Trinity KT400 (S2495AN/ANRS) - AN has audio and LAN, ANRS has that plus RAID and SATA. These are the only recent, non-server, Socket-A mobos that I know of that support ECC and/or registered memory. They don't have dual-BIOS (Gigabyte is the only one that comes to mind that routinely offers it) - but I'm fairly sure that it has protected boot-block so you can recover from a failed Flash attempt.

This looks like what I am looking for too....but I have some questions...

1) It has SATA, will I have to get new harddrives for it?

2) I suppose it supports HDs larger than 138G? Or will my k7s5a support big HDs too?

any of the new boards with sata support both the new sata drives, and the older/more common ata100/133 drives
so you only need to get a new harddrive if you want 🙂

and also most any new board has support for ata133 which gives support for all the large drives
