Looking for a new PSU

My nephews system has a P43 mobo, e8600 processor, 128 gb ssd, and a lot of usb peripherals. For his birthday I bought him a 580 gtx on ebay to replace his 260 gtx. My old ocz powerstream doesn't support the pci-e 6+2. I have had that psu for about 10 years. He is getting older and he is into gaming. I want to get one that I wont have to worry about replacing for a while that could serve for a few hardware generations. Any help from you guys to point me in the right direction is much appreciated! Thanks!

This is one of the best units you can get for a single GPU build: XFX XTR 550W $67 AR shipped

The standard XFX 550W is $59, or $49 after rebate. It's louder, not as efficient and not modular, but practically just as reliable and has the same warranty.

Well thanks that looks pretty good. Maybe going to need a new case also to replace my antiquated Antec, it has served me well for 10 years. What started as a simple video card from ebay has quickly gotten into a full blown build lol.

You do realize, that a 750Ti is faster than a GTX580, and doesn't require any supplemental PCI-E power connectors, right? Just saying...

I second lehtv's recommendation of the XFX XTR 550W. It's fully modular version of the Seasonic G-550, which is an excellent platform to start from. It's gotten very good reviews all over, and uses high quality components throughout. I'm using it for my next build.

Hmm, 10 years is definitely a long time even for a case. For something equally long lasting, you can't go wrong with a Define R4 $84 shipped. Again though if that's a bit more than you'd like to pay, Corsair 200R would probably be fine for just $50

Thanks again I appreciate the awesome help. I have a couple weeks to decide what to do. That case does look just about perfect for what I need and the psu also.

You could most likely just buy a Molex to 6+2 adapter. Should work fine.

Terrible idea to use a 10 year old OCZ. OCZ PowerStream came in sizes of 520W and 600W, whose +12V rail spec was closer to what you'd see in a modern 400W and 500W unit, respectively. With 10 years of capacitor aging, you can't call it reliable any longer, assuming it ever was. OCZ didn't exactly make the best units, PowerStreams used second or third tier caps and came with 3 year warranty.

I had one of those, purchased at end of '04. It seemed like a great choice at the time because it had external adjustment screws for the three voltage rails. It wasn't all that efficient, and would "warm up." It found a home in my Mom's PC, and then went south -- or so it seemed -- since it became problematic for enabling sleep-states. I guess we were able to squeeze about six years' usage out of it.
