Looking for a new phone

I'll be in Hong Kong for about a week at the end of January/beginning of February, and I'm looking for an Android smartphone. I've had my sights on the Samsung Galaxy S for some time now. External microSD support is important to me, which is why I haven't really considered the Google Nexus S. From what I can see, the best features of the Nexus S come from Gingerbread, and the Galaxy S is due to get Gingerbread too.

I was looking at the LG Optimus X2 as well. However, I don't know if it will be in stock in Hong Kong by the time I get there. Also, since it's a dual-core, battery life may be a problem.

I haven't followed the CES coverage very well, so I was wondering if you guys could point me to some other possible phones that I might consider before I go and buy the thing.

No one knows if Galaxy S phones will get Gingerbread. They haven't even gotten Froyo yet but if you're willing to gamble then go for it but me personally I hate Samsung phones but don't let that sway you. Yes we don't know about battery life on the new dual core phones yet. There's just speculation right now so until real reviews come out no one really knows. The Optimus 2X is only supposed to be available in Korea and some European countries right now and no definitive dates for anything else yet.

<-- Not a Samsung fan either.

Can we please stop with the claiming dual core phones will be battery killers? The dual core chips have the same, sometimes lower, TDP than the single core 45nm SoCs that have been out for a while, and often coupled with larger batteries too. Battery life is going to be comparable to existing Android phones, if not improved.

Unfortunately, I'm not not knowledgeable on which phones will work in Hong Kong well. I'm guessing that anything CDMA is out and that you'll be looking at GSM or 'global' devices. Unless you want to only use calls/data while in WiFi.

Until we get definitive reviews of the new dual-core phones, anyone can say what they want until there's evidence to say otherwise.

What would you recommend? I'm not a big fan of the iPhone, crappy app store system + no external storage is not a good combination in my book.

Forget about Samsung Galaxy S because this year now is 4G so you can buy a MyTouch 4G
