its time to do an upgrade from my 1.7 256k to a 2.8 512k and ill need a new motherboard and i was wondering if u guys had any suggestions, im looking for something for stablility not overclocking, 5.1 onboard sound (i guess not too sure on this) maybe gigabit lan (can i use 2 ethernet cards in one machine? 1-10/100 to run the dsl and 1 gigabit to use a crossover cable to the server for file transfer) DDR is nice not necessary, onboard raid is nice not a necessity, i think thats all, what are your suggestions

DDR is a MUST for the P4. Look at the SiS648 chipset, I think there is one, can't remember that has what you want and will not break the bank.

DDR is not a must for the P4. The only true statement that can be made is don't get a fast P4 with SDRAM.

If you want absolute stability get an Intel Motherboard. I think the 845PE (supporting the DDR333 Memory) is the best value/performance you might want.

I like my Gigabyte 8IHXP (i850E) Motherboard. It's fast and stable.

Get a board based on the Intel 845PE chipset if you want the best DDR board available. There are many good ones to choose from. Asus, Abit, Epox, Albatron and Intel (if you dont overclock) are good bets.

my suggestion is that DDR IS necessary.

I'd go for something like the Asus P4PE perhaps.

I845PE motherboard with DDR is a super combination. Stay away from any SDram motherboards.

IMHO

Why in the hell would you want to run your memory at 133mhz when you can run it over 400mhz?

What are you going to do in a home network that needs GigE? There is nothing wrong with it. I would call it cool or nice to have, but certainly optional.

well its not a necessity but a nice option what i had planned on doing was using a crossover cable to the server for file transfer, im working on a website that will be video driven and i will be transfering files back and forth,
