I'd like something with Core 2 Duo, 1GB of ram, a minimum of a x1600 or 7600, decent battery life, at least a 15" screen, and a normal (not flashy) case. My budget is somewhere around $1700. Any ideas?

with a $1700 budget you have a lot of options, i just bought a Hp 9xxx something or other... 1Gb DDR2, Core 2 Duo, 7300go , dvd burner, 17" screen, came in just over a grand, it was a Bestbuy floor model.

How about an Asus S96J? It is a barebones, part of Intel's "Verified By Intel" program. Quality is supposed to be very good, and it runs cool despite having an X1600. It is what I am planning to buy. It does support Core 2 Duo. Prices probably around $1200, though it depends on your config of course. The screen is 15.4" widescreen.

Depending on your timeline, wait for the Go 7700 and MR X1700 to show up. The Go 7700 should show a very nice performance increase over the Go 7600, as well as being manufactured on a smaller process. The MR X1700 should only consume less power, same performance (assuming same clocks).

The Asus A8JS will have the Go 7700 and Core 2 Duo, but is 14" WXGA+ and probly won't hit US for a while:

I'm definitely going consider this laptop. It may not be 15" but it meets all my other requirements.

The 7700 and X1700 would have a bit longer lifetime. But on the other hand they'd be more expensive. That Asus is the only laptop I've heard of one of them being in. I went to BestBuy to look at screen sizes and for me personally, 14" WS is too small, especially for gaming/DVDs.

Yeah, that's the only thing I'm worried about - the 14" screen.
