Well, I have been playing MMOs for years. All fantasy based. Not by choice, it just happened that way. I played Ultima, EQ1 and 2 and now have been playing WoW sense beta. Long story short I am played out on Fantasy based MMO's. I want something different.

Any of you know any good non-fantasy based MMOs.

My buddy that I play MMO's with has been looking into EVE-Online. I use to be a big space sim fan. He says its sounds pretty good. Anyone ever play it that can tell me how it is.

Good Game. The learning curve is like the tower of babylon. And if you don't get your assets straight really fast, you'll get really bored.

I was in the same boat. Tried Eve-Online. It made absolutely no sense to me. Learning curve is an understatement. You literally start in space. Flying towards nothingness in your ship, with no direction on how to control it, where to fly to, what to do, anything.

I tried to dock with a space station near by clicking on it and selecting options. After trying for about 30 minutes to figure out how to undock or do something in the station, I ended up watching the other monitor where my girlfriend was playing. She got into a fight with a pirate (she seemed to figure out how to fire phasers) we ended up nowhere near each other using visual landmarks nor any idea how to find each other, and we just gave up after an hour or two and just uninstalled.

Eve-online would probably be best if you had someone who knew how to play show you the ropes or read some good tutorials online. I did neither and didn't give it a fair look.

If you do try it just dont download install and try to figure it out, otherwise you'll probably uninstall right away like I did.

There is no learning curve, it's a cliff.

But as long as you are willing to learn and can read the 100 km/h scrolling text in the wookie... er i mean rookie help chat then you can learn the basics to be able to actually play the game, later you can figure out how to do anything useful.

Just keep in mind it has grinding that puts WoW to shame (only for money, as your skills train at a set pace even if you canceled your subscription -there are several that take over a month each-, you learn skills faster by learning skills that make you learn faster).

If you survive the horrible grinding and make it to 0.0 then it's a cut throat PvP world where anything and everything goes with wars, alliances made and broken, epic battles (if you can pretend the lag isn't there), propaganda and ever shifting territories as alliances rise and fall. Oh and NEVER fly anything you can't afford to replace, death in this game has major consequences.

Well there goes that idea haha. I'm all for the steep learning curve and the "Hardcore"ness of the game but it seems like I don't have the time for it. I just feel like everything out now is too easy. I am on my 4th lvl 70 char in WoW. And I play like 1-2 hours every other day. Abit more one weekends. I remember back in the old EQ days it took for EVER to get max level. And most people I know had 1 MAYBE 2 max lvl characters. Now, someone can start playing wow today and have the same level char and same level of gear I have in like 2 months.

They seriously need to make more non-fantasy MMO's. They are all pretty much the same.

Hey, I disagree with the above posters. Eve has a nice tutorial when you start out with your first character that covers most of the basics - moving, mining, missions, jump gates, general navigation and interaction etc. It is designed in small steps and after a few hours you'll see the UI is not as terrible as it seems.
True, there's quite a lot more than that to learn but hey...it takes some sweat to become a pirate! Why do you think the pirate population decreased so dramatically over the last 200 years here on earth? people got lazy.
It's just a shame EVE is the most horribly laggy game I've ever played. There's little connection between mouse clicks and what is happening in-game. Amusing at times (if you're drunk), often frustrating.

Note I have only played the 14-day trial (due to lag issues) so I may be talking out of my behind.
Sign up for a trial account and see if you like it.
