Looking for a new monitor

I'm looking to upgrade from my old 22" Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 CRT. I'm looking for a 23"-24" LCD in around the $200-$300 price range, but I would consider going over $300 a bit for a quality monitor, just not too much. As far as usage is concerned, I am going to be gaming so having a monitor that's good for gaming is a must. However, since most of the time I'm using my computer for things other than gaming (office work, web browsing, web design/scripting), I don't want to make sacrifices there either. I also want the option to connect my Xbox 360 up to it. I haven't decided yet if I want to run it on my 32" 720p television or run on a 23-24" at 1080.

Originally the ASUS VW246H interested me, mainly due to price, but after doing some reading I'm not so sure anymore. I've done a lot of reading on different panel types and more specifically TN vs IPS panels and that also led me towards the NEC EA231WMI. However, I'm not sure if it would be any good for gaming. Also, no HDMI which I guess isn't too bad. I'll only need HDMI if I'm using my 360 and even then I could use an HDMI-DVI cable. The better color and text reproduction as well as viewing angles does interest me though as the way my desk is setp up the monitor is slightly above eye level anyway.

Anybody have experience gaming with the NEC or have other recommendations for an all around good monitor with a decent price tag?

That's a pretty common size being looked at. Best bet would be to skim through the lcd thread to see the common opinions.

I game on the EA231WMi and have no problems at all. These days I primarily play fast-paced, twitchy, FPS games like L4D2, COD MW2, BF BC2, CS: S, etc.

Coming from a CRT it might be a bit more difficult to get used to, but I never notice any input lag or obvious ghosting. The only way I'd choose a TN panel is if I were a professional gamer and every millisecond counted, and even then, I'd probably grab a CRT.

Thanks for the input CurseTheSky. I've been seeing mixed reviews from reviews on the monitor with regards to gaming, but quite a few people note not being able to notice any ghosting or input lag as well. I think I may just end up getting the NEC
