Looking For A New Monitor: Update

I am leaning towards the samsung. Would that be the best choice in terms of picture?

Best choice in terms of picture under $1k might be a $900 24" NEC. But at that price, you'd might as well get a 27".

I received the monitor today. The picture does look very good on it. I read more reviews where they complained about the black light bleed on this particular monitor from this thread

I took some pictures from a dark screen it does not seem as bad compared to other monitors in my house but would you guys be able to look and tell me what you think if I should return it and go for another model that was suggested.

Would the ips panels be less of a problem with black light bleeding then this type of panel?

That does look fairly bad. I thought I had linked a review of the Samsung monitor that pointed out the light bleed but still recommended it over U2412M but it doesn't appear so. The light bleed has little to do with the panel type and more with the pressure so it has more to do with the design of the monitor.

Anyway, does it affect you while you are using it, especially during dark scenes?

If you don't notice it at all in any use, it could be argued that you wouldn't notice a cheaper, inferior e-IPS panel in the U2412M. I suppose the first question should have been whether or not there're stores around you that carry higher end monitors so you can check them out in person before buying.

I even tried looking up the different ips panel types but to no avail. I didn't really get a grasp of what each type meant. The 27in samsung of that model says there is a hit or miss on the light bleed but the 24in is always like that from that review thread I listed. Best way to test would be pop in a movie correct? Only other time would be in a dark game scene that I could think of.

Might be in my head I was kind of focused on the bleed after reading that review.

Is the picture a real representation of what you see with your eyes? I have an asus proart that bleeds some but to my eyes the background is black and not blue.

I would return that monitor, that backlight bleed is horrible. Seeing light on a lit black background is impossible to avoid on an LCD panel. It should be a uniform indication of light behind the screen, not a splotchy mess like that.

I have an IPS and 2 MVA panels and none of them have bleed like that, I thought that sort of bleed was only seen on cheap TN monitors.

The blue hue in the picture might be from the camera. My eyes see it as black. I can see the bleed though without the assistance of the camera.

I was looking at the asus pro art series monitor though last night. Does anyone have any input on that monitor? I read the reviews especially the back light bleeding parts seems that there might be a few that have that issue but it's not all of them like this samsung model.

I have the asus PA246Q and it does bleed some. I'm ok with it for photo editing, general use and the odd movie. Colors are great but in bright parts of the image I can see some sort of texture during photo editing (like a grid or something don't really know the technical term). Having said that the black levels are not super great and I would think that may be better options if you're into movies. My impressions are only on the default setting. I haven't got time to play around.

I know the feeling because I am finding it hard to pick a "quality" monitor that can still handle fps games as well.

My search still continues.....

I am reluctant to buy one of the expensive NEC monitors I don't see how they will fare much better then what is currently out there. Would larger monitors fare better then the 24in ones? I see that the 27in samsung was doing better in the back light bleeding dept then the 24in monitor I had chose.

I see BenQ has some good displays for gaming is that worth checking out?

Does the bleeding really bothers you? I tried taking some pictures of my monitor but they don't really represent what I see with my eyes. The bleeding is more visible in the picture than irl. The main weakness is the black levels

Sorry but I don't know about the samsung. I did some quick search and it looks like this is an IPS variation made by Samsung. The main advantage seems to be viewing angle. My buying process was kind of easy since I wanted a wide gamut monitor mainly for photo editing, and the asus is the most affordable one so far.

I wish I had more stores to check out the monitors. Only thing around here is best buy, staples, and office depot. I will try the asus one next week after I send back the samsung.

Received the Asus monitor on friday. Plugged it in and played a little BF3 on it colors are very very vibrant much more so then my LCD tv. So far I am pleased with it. I did see some youtube videos of the monitor flickering though. Would the best way to test this out be to leave it on for several hours?
