Looking for a new Mobo, 2 questions (sata/ram)

When the SATA drives first came out, I heard about how you want the sata chip to be on the south bridge or else it will use the pci bus? Does that make sense? So all the new mobos do this? Are there certain mobos that are better for SATA drives?

I have an amd system, I have 1 gig of pc2700 ram. Can you use that ram on intel boards?

Also I heard about a new chipset/socket coming soon, should I wait a month to build this system? Can anyone explain whats coming and whether it's worth the wait. And should I get a board that supports the 64 bit chips? Thanks!
