Looking for a new laptop...

Hello,

I'm looking for a new laptop to buy soon, as my old one just died. I don't care about gaming, I want one that will last me the next 4 years or so:

- carrying with me to class/library = LIGHTWEIGHT and DURABLE
- storing and editing thousands of pictures
- storing and listening to music
- writing papers and making PPT presentations
- surfing the internet

Any recommendations? I've got no preference for either a Mac or PCs, though I've never used a Mac before. I've been looking at Lenovo and Fujitsu tablets, and I really like the MacBook Pro 15.4". My budget is around $2000; I want something for the long haul rather than cheap.

Yes, but that means I've got tons of options. I can spend about $2000, but it'd be great if I could spend less. And I want to know what people here think is the best in terms of value and quality.

Go for one of those ultraportable notebooks, like the Lenovo X60 if you want good quality, but it may be a little higher to the top of your budget. The Dell Latitude D420 looks like it would be a good combination of quality and value. The Latitude line is much better than the Inspiron line, they use magnesium alloy in the Latitudes and other features make the Latitudes much more desirable than the mediocre mainstream notebooks Dell puts out.

If you're going to be carrying it around a lot, I'd go for something smaller than the MacBook Pro 15.4". That extra pound or two that can be shaved off by going with an ultraportable and the space difference really helps when you carry your laptop everywhere.

IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad X60s. Done.

With support and durability to boot. Really for your needs it will suit you fine.
