Need some help deciding on the cheapest model of new notebook pc with these specs;

15? or 17? lcd
1.7Gb (533Mhz) CPU (Pentium)
1Gb RAM ddr2 (533Mhz)
7200rpm HDD (40Gb+ is OK)
Combo or DVDRW drive
Onboard video is ok.
Must be new with new warranty.

I don't care about brands too much but I don't want a dell system. I have a mate that can get me some $ off the price of all brands except dell. I will not spend any more than $2,200 AU ($1650 US).

from the HotDealsClub.com website -

Dell Home - Inspiron 6000; 1.6GHz, 15", 512MB, 40GB, 2yr warranty for $807
I configured a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook computer as follows:
Pentium M 1.6GHz CPU with 2MB-cache and 400MHz bus
Windows XP MCE
15.4" WXGA widescreen display
512MB DDR2 memory
40GB hard drive
24x DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive
Intel Pro Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless
Integrated Intel Media Accelerator 900 Graphics
6-Cell battery
2 year at-home warranty service
Price comes to $1049 before any discounts. Coupon code C6$06RV0FR8441 gives 15% off of a configuration above $1000, such as the above configuration which drops it down to $783. Add around $24 to ship a computer.

You need to get the laptop's pre-discount price (the crossed-out price) above $1000 to qualify for 15% off. I did it by increasing the warranty, but it you prefer something else instead, you could increase other options, such as CPU speed, hard drive size, and DVD Burner.

I think you guys are missing my point. I don't want 5400rpm and I don't want 333mhz ddr. The lappy needs to be the specs of my original post (nothing else will do)

Just like someone to chime in with some cheapy Dell.... :) Like lowest price solves everything.... it doesn't.

You can get what you want in a T-series ThinkPad.... right about that price if not cheaper actually.. The biggest roadblock you will hit with ThinkPad is getting one in that price range with the 60gig 7200rpm drive.....Which is normally reserved for the T4*p models * represents 0,1,2, and 3.

You may have to buy the 7200 rpm drive of your choice and install on your own. There is a utility on the preload to make factory recovery disks to put the preload on a newly installed drive.

Uh.. you do realize the "deal" I posted is configurable to your liking, right? I'd think starting at $800 bucks you'd have some nice configuration/upgrade headroom to play with. Then I'd say if you want something done "right" do it your-own-damn-self. Good luck w/ that. :disgust:

Fixed, I am not being able to post a good link from IBM for some reason, so here is the notebook finder link it should lead you to 533 Mhz bus T series just under your price range ;) !!!link
And concerning the 7200 rpm harddrive getting a 7200rpm of a manfacturer directly can cost you a fortune, go with the 5400 rpm as WackyDan said creat the recovery CDs then install the 7200rpm harddrive and sell the 5400 rpm on ebay it's not that hard really.

Thinkpad with an aftermarket HD (costs around 100-200 bucks, leaning towards 200).

The quality of thinkpads let you have it safely without buying the extra warranty, I never bought a warranty on a Thinkpad so sticking with the basic warranty that comes with it, and not having to buy a warranty alone makes up for the price of the hdd, think about it will you feel safe buying a Compaq of the same price or a Dell and then getting a bad MB problem out of no where ? !! Thinkpads aren't perfect but they sure are a hell lot durable than others I have owned
Also they have released these new widescreen version called the Z-series you might want to check that out you might change your mind ;)

Anyway can you guys think of a make/model for the price? I am able to get that one for $1,890 AU.

Thanks :)

Actually... if it's 100gb... it's most likely a 5400rpm. I've seen most 7200rpm's in a 60Gb, though you might find them in 80, Never seen them as an option for 100's.
