Ok so I'm looking to get a new laptop, and I already told my parents that it would make a good Christmas gift. I want a compact laptop because my current one (15 inches or so) is too heavy to lug around on 20 minute walks. I want a good laptop, probably between 11-12 inches. Power is necessary, and possibly even decent graphics to play some games.

I live in Canada, and I don't really have a budget. I'd prefer to keep it around $1000 CAD if possible.

I would say the Dell XPS 13 for $1,000 USD is pretty much the best deal for what you are looking for (those slightly above what you want to spend). It has 13" 1080p IPS screen, i5-6200U, 8GB of RAM and 128GB SSD in a package that matches most 11-12" screens, because the bezel is extremely small.

Unfortunately, that $1,000 US model costs $1,300 Canadian. The Core i3 model is more in his price range. Still a good enough system, mind you -- just have to temper expectations.

I'd also be tempted to point toward an 11-inch MacBook Air, although it's definitely a step back in terms of the display. The big deal to me is that it's both more portable and has a better trackpad/keyboard combo.

Oh wow, I thought the exchange rate was still in the $1.10-1.15 range. Ya, I guess the $1,000 USD model is probably a bit out of reach.

That's a good suggestion, but I think that 4GB of memory just won't do.

I've looked around a bit myself, and I'm thinking what this guy wants just won't be available for a reasonable price. Small laptops really carry a serious premium if you want something decently fast.

I was hoping for an i5 with say a 950M. Anything around that if I raised the budget to say $1300 CAD? Again, the person the posting this for doesn't particularly have a budget.
