Choosing between a Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, or HP what in the world would you pick.
All are equiped about the same and roughly the same price too.
The Dell is a Inspiron 6000, the Toshiba is a M45S331, the Compaq is the V2135us, and the HP is the dv1040us.

Any favorites or opinions on these brands/models?

I prefer Dell, always had good luck with them in the past. My new job gave me a brand new HP, but I don't like the case/covering, it feels cheap & flimsy.

Ideally yes i would get an IBM, but that's far out of my price range unfortunately

What is your price range?

Toshiba for me.

I don't like the "eraser" mouse that is on most IBMs (they may have touch pads now?)
The dells I have played with were kinda flimsy, except one that was sub-notebook magnesium.

More like 1200-1300 basically.

I have looked at something in a 1.6 Sonoma, 512 ram, and I like the truebright widescreen or whatever each brand calls it. Not a necessity but its nice.

Looking for something that is more portable than a desktop replacement or anything big like that.

Get a Powerbook. (edit: O I see your price range, Get an iBook) 😛

The only other laptop I've ever owned was a Dell, and while it simply can't compare to my Powerbook in terms of quality and overall I-love-it-goodness 😀, Dell's support is great and makes it worth it imo. I had a video card fry, so 2 days later they had a guy come out to my house to install a new video card for me and he put in a new keyboard to boot just because mine was a little sticky. But then again, I've never messed with the other 2 companies so they could be equally good, I dunno.

IBM T series all have both touchpad & "eraser"... 1" thick, 4.6lbs, 14.1" or 15" lcd...

My T41 managed go to ~5:20 mins today on a single charge, and my battery is almost 1 year old with 98 full cycles....

We use Dell laptops at work and they have stunk so far. My personal laptop is a Fujitsu and I am extremely happy with it.
