Looking for a new(ish) truck - opinions?

Hi All:

So as some of you know I have long had two cars. An acura TSX that I use as a commuter car, and a 2003 F150 that I use on the weekends. As much as I loved the F150 I had to let it go last weekend due to various issues. It wouldn't pass inspection without ~$4000 in work, and I am just not willing to put that much into a 13 year old truck.

As a result, I am looking to replace the F150 and my Acura with a nicer, newer truck. I work from home most of the time now, so I don't need a fuel sipper anymore. That, and I simply like driving the truck much more than the acura.

My budget is $40k, so I am likely in the used market. I don't have many needs. Just a backup camera and reasonably decent highway fuel economy (20+ MPG on the highway would be fine). I have a 22' boat that is 5000lbs, so reasonable towing capacity and a trailer brake controller is also needed. I also have to have a crew cab with a short (5.5'-6')bed. Heated seats are also an absolute must (it gets friggin cold up here).

As for wants - while I have a strong preference for leather seating in trucks (its a LOT easier to clean), I don't have to have it. I would also like a remote starter, rear window defroster, and power sliding rear panel. A moonroof would be nice but is way down the list of wants.

That said, I am contemplating the following options. Its surprisingly hard to choose between them, so I would like your comments. All would be purchased used (assuming I can find them).

2015 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel - Big horn or Laramie trim - pros - Amazing fuel economy for a 7000lb vehicle. Nice interior. Cons: Diesel exhaust complexity/reported problems. Odd driving dynamics (turbo lag). Its a dodge

2015 F-150 XLT or Lariat - Pros - Aluminum body (no body rust in New England), ecoboost engine turns a truck into a rocket, strong towing capacity; Cons - expensive. Ecoboost gets terribad real world gas mileage. V8 has reliability issues. Used inventory is scarce.

2012-2014 F150 XLT or Lariat - Pros - Affordable. Good features. Nice driving dynamics. Cons - ecoboost efficiency is even worse. No aluminum body. Electronics are a bit wonky.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

FWIW I have considered and ruled out the midsize offerings (Colorado, Canyon, Tacoma) as they are less capable trucks that have the same or worse mileage ratings as their full size counterparts (why anyone buys them is beyond me). I have test driven the silverado and ruled it out as being uncomfortable (to me). I have test driven the RAM ecodiesel and the current and previous generation ford F150s as well.

Why not buy new? With all the incentives out there $40k buys a lot of truck! Personally I'm a GM guy. As much as the diesel intrigues me, I can't bring myself to buy a Chrysler.

I feel the same way re: Ram. Soup comes to nuts its a Chrysler/Dodge. I would never touch one of their cars. But their trucks sure can be purdy.

As for buying new vs. used - its pretty hard to find a new Ford or Ram for under 40K unless you want something that is fairly barebones. XLT trim on the Ford is within that range, but nothing higher.

The Ford 5.0 has reliability issues? I was under the impression they were pretty solid.

Having driven a vehicle recently with the 3.6 ecoboost I can say riding that wave of torque is incredibly addictive! In normal cruising it seemed to offer ok mpg, but i gather when towing is when it plummets.

A friend of mine had the turbo fail on his Ram 2500 recently. Cost him $5k to repair. The truck is only about 4-5 years old.

A turbo on a diesel is not really the same as a turbo on a gas engine. The Ford turbos are designed to last, but even if they fail they are not supposed to cost a fortune to replace.

My paralegal's husband is a Ford master mechanic and that is what he told me. I thought it was an interesting point to make as the V8 is a simpler engine.

i am a GM truck person as well.

Maybe give them another shot, The GMC line is usually more comfortable than the Chevy line to me. though, i have not looked at the new models, I have an 09. I am not sure i want to upgrade due to all the DI carbon issues. I have the older iron block 5.3 that is nearly indestructible. I would look for one off lease or similar, Then spend a few bucks on whatever accessories you want. ex: mud guards, bed storage, tie downs, etc.

Why not a Toyota? You could get a pretty nice Tundra for that money. I've had a Tundra and an F150, and the Toyota was definitely superior in terms of quality.

There is a used Platinum near me that checks all your boxes and more.. Except for 20 MPG on the highway...
But the 5.7 will make you smile

Stick with Gas.
It's a truck, forget about mileage. Pick the one that does the best under load.
The company I worked for had GMC's. They pulled good with heavy loads.
In the past we had all but Toyota. The GMC was the best of the bunch. With regular care they lasted 200K. About 3 years.

Just a quick update - decided to purchase a 2016 F150XLT Screw with the 2.7L ecoboost. Did the deal over memorial day and couldn't be happier.

I think you made good decision. I would have told you to stay away from Dodge for a couple yrs. Wait til the eco diesel been out for awhile. I love eco boost 3.5. Its got an awesome torque curve. Probably my only gripe is it shifts a lot when u got trailer behind it. I got GM Yukon 5.3 LS1 and its horse. I tow pretty heavy camper with it and does great!

You pretty much can't go wrong with any of the new F150s.

But the 5.0s don't have any reliability problems nowadays. The early 5.0s did, but they're solid now.
