If you can put the set at one of the far walls I'd look at >50" like the Mitsubishi WS55311 or the Hitachi 51S500.

If you can't, look for a 42-46" like the Toshiba 42H83 or the Mitsubishi WS42311 or the WS48311 (yeah...48" but should be fine from a 9-10' viewing distance).

Oh and again like I've said in all these TV threads, don't buy Sony.

In fact, one of my best friend's Sony 57" XBR which is newer and more expensive than my Sony just broke. He tried the automatic flash focus button and the TV just fried. Called up Sony service and can't get a repairman until Oct. 4. When he told the guy what happened, he said he knows exactly what is wrong. Sounds like another common problem with Sonys again.

<==Disgruntled broken Sony 36XBR400 owner.

On the avsforum site, some people have been able to get the 50LC13 for as little as $2000. If you ever take a look at this TV, you will be very impressed. They have them in Sears, BB, CC, Tweeter and other places. Take a look or go to the avs site and read the reviews.

I have my eyes on it but my wife won't let me get it until I can get rid of my 250lb behemoth Sony somehow.

A good decision, price/performance-wise.

The hot thing right now is either an LCD RPTV or an DLP RPTV. Both of these are newer technologies [DLP being the better], and allow for much thinner cabinets.

Of course, there is always something better, and that would be LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon), but the technology isn't mainstream yet, but the quality is worlds above even that of DLP, which is pretty good in its self.

Oh, and I highly agree, DO NOT BUY A SONY TV, unless you are going to buy an extended warranty; trust me you will need it.

From what I hear, mitsubishi makes some of the best RPTVs out there, extrememly good picture quality. (I think some of their lines use 9" CRTs, which is a lot brighter and sharper than the typical 7" or 8" found in lesser sets). The only thing about CRT rptvs is that they have a considerably deeper cabinet, and weigh more so than LCD or DLP sets.

but the panasonic plasmas are extremely clear... so vivid.. I think they have the highest contrast ratio in the plasma screens atm.

UPDATE: ah yes: 4000:1 contrast ratio. Others have 3000, still clear as well but if you guys haven't seen one, I suggest you guys go to Fry's and check them out. (if they are available) :)

That may be but I still, at this time, wouldn't get nor recommend a plasma. Besides, the OP is looking to stay under $2000. :)

The Panasonic 50LC13 is an LCD RPTV.

If you are going to get a regular CRT RPTV, I would suggest Hitachi. Hitachi actually makes the 9" CRTs that Toshiba and Pioneer use in their RPTVs. They also don't give them the best CRTs and use the better stuff for themselves.

If you can afford it though, go for the LCD RPTV. The don't suffer burn in, have a better viewing angle, better form factor and PQ is awesome.

None of them will suffer phosphor wear (not burn-in on an RPTV) if properly calibrated (or at least setup with an Avia DVD).

And do the smaller Hitachis use 9" guns?

If you look hard enough, you can find some lcd RPTVs for very close to 2k. But, you will be hard pressed to find a DLP RPTV for near 2k, there are really only like two manufacturers making DLP RPTVs right now, samsung and panasonic.

I would like to add that, although DLP is newer technology, I praise it because it doesn't need a convergence (and it's light and small).

Although, a properly setup and adjusted CRT rptv will have much better picture than DLP will for a long while, or at least till LCoS comes out. This is because of the color wheel problem.

Not a bad deal, delivered.

You should hike over to The Spot and check out the Toshiba forum, too, and research that set a bit to be sure :)
