What resolution display will you be using?

I'd consider upgrading the PSU to at least 400w (ideally, 500w) before throwing in a more powerful card.

Once that's done, I'd look at perhaps AMD RX 560/570 or NVIDIA GTX 1060.

im not sure on the resolution. like i said im new to this but i have been gaming for years the newer games kind of took off ahead of my old knowings of how things work.
i did look into a new psu looking at maybe a 600w. i have to stay as cheap as possible and like to be able to get stuff from best buy or amazon since i have cards for them.
il look into those cards now.
thanks

Sadly this is a horrible time to be buying any sort of video card, especially if you are on a tight budget. The mining craze has caused prices to go insane, assuming you can actually even find the card you are looking for.

You might be better served getting yourself a console and/or holding out for a few months to see if prices settle down.

you have been lied to, that's no surprise.
i would guess that your monitor resolution is 1920x1080. It's VERY common. Anything under this, would be old and weird, anything above would be expensive.

your 400w PSU *could* push a modern card.. wait .. it's not 400w .. it's THREEhundred watt.

you need a decent PSU to use ANY graphics card that doesn't just take power from the motherboard, and all the good ones do.

it does not need to be expensive. looking at that website, i'm going to guess you are in the US. you can buy a Corsair 450w for as little as $23

after which, any GPU will do, the bigger the better, but you don't need to get THE BEST, also as you have a rather mediocre CPU.
this 1050 is a good deal for the money: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gXnG3C/msi-geforce-gtx-1050-2gb-video-card-gtx-1050-2g-oc

ideally, you will want to look around places like Microcenter and Newegg to see what deals they have on 1050/1060 and Radeon 560/570, and when you see something with a big discount, BAM !

i do need you to understand, your CPU is also part of the problem. The new video card will help you play games you couldn't before, but to get good performance, you need to scap that CPU as well ...
basically, build yourself a PC.

"Compute Cores" is not really a thing. It must be a HP marketing thing. I hate to tell you this, but:
1) it is a very bad time to be buying a decent graphics card.
2) you may not want to sink more money into this computer anyway. You may not be able to handle a higher end graphics card. Your system has a small power supply and may not have the capability to support a high end graphics card

I'm not saying it is a bad computer-it is great for browsing the web and light tasks.

You may want to hold onto your money (especially since mid to upper end graphics cards are overpriced right now.). Take that money and set a goal of building a computer specifically for gaming. The longer you wait, the better value you will get for your money.

In the meantime, play Unreal Tournament 2004 and Warzone 2100. Those games played on the biggest baddest gamming rig or a lowly laptop with integrated graphics (btw-your computer has integrated graphics) will play great-and be fun!

I wouldn't even bother. It is such a bad time to buy a GPU, that only used older cards are barely worth it. That CPU is so weak in single threaded games that it will bottleneck a lot of newer games.

This CPU along with the entire FM2+ lineup perform poorly in many games due to the weak cores. Putting any more money into this system is a waste. If your heart it set on buying a GPU, I would absolutely buy a decent PSU. You are in a tough position.

What games are you wanting to play? You most likely are at 1920x1080 @ 60hz which doesn't need a lot of GPU power.
