Ok I just came off 7 months of wow, level 70 paladin. I left over security issues.

I enjoyed the questing, I like grinding, I enjoy solo over groups most times, Right people in groups make the difference.

I liked the world trade chat, I put up with the children.

My children played wow too and we really enjoyed helping each other out.

I have read up on

eve online conflicting reports
Vanguard conflicting reports
Guild Wars conflicting reports
City of heros/villians (didnt like either)
Currently trying rappelz eh not triggered my like dislike yet

I enjoy questing and rewards

So any advice here?

Thank you

Mike

One note tried x3 reunion, and its too steep a learning curve for me 3 hours in menus and I can finally undock the ship, lol

eve online might not be right since you play with your children.

You could be building up in some system for weeks and then some corp comes wandering in and destroying what you have been going for. But thats a risk that makes the reward even sweeter in my opinion.

I had such high hopes for X3. Yeah, a tutorial, ANYTHING would have been nice. My friend purchased it, but due to the performance on his average rig and the difficulty in getting started, he gave it to me. I lasted about an hour with the game. Total lack of direction.

How about LOTRO? It comes out in April and if you pre-order at one of the select places you get access to open-beta (you get to carry your character over to launch), a couple of unique in-game items, plus reduced costs - $9.99/month or $199 for a lifetime membership.

I have been playing the beta for a while now and really love it. May be worth looking into anyway.

Cheers,
KT

He likes grinding so I'm not sure if LotRO is for him. It feels like minimal grinding to me and PvP is not emphasized. Granted those aspects really appeal to me...dunno about the OP though.

Edit: Although the questing and soloing are good in LotRO

True, but he said he really likes questing, which there is a tonne of in LOTRO. It also is pretty easy to solo or group depending on what you want/need at the time.

Pvp I only did 1 battleground in wow, and maybe 3 raids on horde lol was fun but I like questing/grinding better.

I enjoy helping my children with quests, and I love storylines, the kind you get when questing.

In wow I did hundreds of quests, and was in a quild (a few of them) I still prefer solo.

The only thing missing from the reviews are mounts, are they available?

Thank you.
Mike

One major thing I like about this is starting when the game starts, unlike wow where it was out for 2 years before I played :)

Currently in Beta you can only buy your own mount once you get to level 35, up until then you are just renting them.

The questing/storylines are absolutely the greatest thing about LOTRO IMHO and if you want to join up with your kids it is great fun to create a Fellowship and do an instanced quest or whatever.

If LOTRO doesn't satisfy, check out Vanguard. I have been playing it for a month and enjoying it. Had a 60 Horde Hunter on Blackhand in WoW, and find the interface to Vanguard to be similar enough that you'd fund everything works about as you expect. Graphics are gorgeous (but very demanding on your system), and the world is huge. It's also a new game, with its share of glitches, but connectivity and reliability of play have been excellent for me.

Also has some of the best ambient music and sound I have heard in an RPG. Love the combat system too.

Good stuff. Make sure you get the Founder's Pre-order Package so you get all the benefits I listed above.

Thats the part that had me worried. I thank you for that information. I never got an answer there.

You really have very little to lose in order to at least try it. Just go to EBGames and put down $5 for a pre-order DVD then play the open beta and decide if you like it. If not you can just cancel your pre-order, so you would really only be out the $5.

Cheers,
KT

Edit: clarity

To my knowledge, you get that back.

Also, I'm a bit curious... what security issues were you having in WoW? Just kind of worried about receiving ALL of those stupid messages from Blizzard about being aware of scams and such? The unfortunate route of the top dog, regardless of market. It's kind of like when I go home and hit up Myspace, I see I have friend requests... yeah, they're from 4 different people with all the same picture... adbots ftw :(.

Yeah I actually thought about that after I posted. I think you do get your $5 back if you cancel the pre-order.

So then you really have nothing to lose, except some time of course. ;)

And sleep. :p

Hell, for five bucks, even if I lose that, it's a damned sight more entertainment than I'll get from a movie these days. :D

Going to EB after work I guess ... bastard. ;)

:D I do what I can.

Don't forget though, actual open beta does not start until the 30th. So unless you are in Europe (I know you are not) you will have to wait until then, or try to get into closed beta for the next couple of weeks.

Cheers,
KT

Account was hijacked 3 times, lost 584 gold, weapons worth 200 more gold all special items worth 300 more gold on last hijack. Total lost well over 2000 gold items etc

i was level 70 paladin named Thelena

I ran 3 virus scanners daily, as well as a counterspy app
I changed password weekly
I never visited outside sites on this computer.
The virus I got was wow-el the last time, and it hit both accounts (2 seperate computers and accounts were hijacked)

Also the items I had banked were quest items I had put there 2 weeks prior when i started doing outland quests in earnest, they were in my bags after hijack in same order they had been previously. (old screenshot comparisson).

Blizzard said they would fix it, but then they promised that 2 times prior, no gold was returned and items were completely useless to my class for the replacements they gave 1 time. The account was jacked just prior to buying mounts (saving up gold for the cost of last mount was 900 for training and mount (flying) also right after major patch.

I got pissed off deleted all toons and cancled the accounts.

They said it was my fault for the viruses, ok, sure. I have done everything to prevent this, added a firewall, virus scanners from 3 companies, ran hijack this and cwshredder daily, and the only sites i visit on this computer are bills, anandtech and distributed computing stats sites. I go to gogamer and everyonce in a while i visit walmart.

I use the other computer to surf, and am getting a strictly surfing computer ( bought and in mail so should be here sometime in the next week or so).

I wanted a new game as its my daughters bday on the 20th and she loved wow, grandpa sent her 100.00 lol so I am buying 2 copies onf for each daughter, but I will get to play too lol :)
