Looking for a new credit card with good rewards

So I've had my credit card from Wells Fargo for over 2 years since I turned 18. I just checked my credit rating and its 761 so my dad suggested switching cards to something that would give me some rewards.

I guess in terms of rewards I don't necessarily need gas money because I don't own a car (although I plan to purchase one in the next 6 months). I do fly occasionally to visit friends, but I wouldn't want a card that only specializes in air miles.

Soo...I don't know if you need any more info. Suggestions?

I'd vote for Chase Freedom. That's what I chose for myself; I graduated college this year & my credit rating was about the same as yours when I applied. They have like 15 spending categories (fast food, gas, utilities, groceries, dept stores, etc), and in the 3 categories in which you spend the most money, you get 3% back. You get 1% back on everything else. You can only withdraw rewards in chunks of $50. No annual fee. Look at their categories & if most of your spending fits into those areas, this could be good for you. Alternatively if most of your spending doesn't fit into their categories, you may want to look elsewhere.

If you're going to be driving a bit, Chase & citibank also have nice gas cards that give like 5% back on gas & 1% on everything else, I think. (I don't own a car.) Amex also has some nice rewards cards, but iirc they all have annual fees.

Chase Freedom is nice, although it has a few quirks.

To summarize:

3% back as eLiu stated above for your top 3 categories. If you wait until you have $200 in rewards before cashing out, you get $250 instead, which brings the reward total to 3.75%. Pretty nice indeed.

The problem is, several major stores such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot and others don't count in any category and you get back 1% at these stores.

The other problem I have with my Chase Freedom card is it keeps getting shut off for "suspicious activity". Three times this has happened in the nine months I've had this card and all purchases were 100% legitimate. It's nice that they look out for you, but Chase goes way over the top and it's become a nuisance.

Nice card though, when it works.

So I'm also hearing some good things about Blue from American Express. I noticed they have a points incentive or a cash back incentive. Any suggestions on cash back vs points cards?

I have blue and freedom.

As far as rewards, I'd go with Freedom.

ive never had a problem with my chase freedom card getting shut off. i use it for everything, which is mostly food, except gas.

My chase reward card gives me 3% on gas purchase and 1% on everything else. The credit is automatically credited back to the next statement, which is nice.

citi mtvU - You get 5% back on restaurants--including fast food--bookstores (including everything at Amazon), music stores, video rental stores and movie theatres.

OP, did you do a search?
this has been asked a bunch of times now...

anyway, the general recommendations in no order:
1) Chase Freedom
2) Citi MTVu
3) Amex Blue
4) Costco Amex

all are good cards - depends what rewards you want~

The Costco Amex only pays 5% on gas for Business members. Gold and Executive members get 3% on gas.

Captial One gave me rewards on my card because I stopped using it and they wanted to tempt me to use it more often.

Thanks for more good input. And no I didn't search cause I don't give a damn.

!

Yeah I'm pretty happy with my Chase Freedom as far as rewards. IIRC the APR for purchases and cash is pretty high, basically when I got it it didn't have a focus on say 0% interest for 12 months or low BT rates, but it did have good rewards. I pay in full so it is perfect for me.

Best thing is out of nowhere, the first or second statement I got $100 credited to my rewards; I guess they were running a special I didn't know about.

I concur with the guy who mentioned that stores like Walmart not being in the categories and showing up as 1%. Kind of a bummer for me with how much % I charge per month being from Walmart. The rewards are cool but really after all this time, minus the $100 they gave me, I think I'm only around $40-45 after 9 months of having it, though only the past few months have involved a decent amount of charges (i.e. more than $50-100 per month). But hey I will for sure take that!

Also when I got the card it was only $500 limit (college student at the time with a pathetic yearly income), but once I graduated and got a job, I requested online to increase it to $5000, and within hours it was approved. So that is cool of them.

I started with a Citi Dividend for Students card back when the program was still 5% Gas/Groceries/Drugs and 1% all else, but changed it over to the card a few months after they changed me to the 2% Gas/Groceries/Drugs/Utilities/Cable 1% all else program. I now have the Citi Premier Pass MC, which gives 1 thankyou point per dollar and 1 thankyou point per 3 miles flown with tickets purchased with the card. It's not necessarily the best program, but it adds on with the thankyou points I was getting for my bank accounts with Citibank.

I also have an Amex Blue Student, which is 1 point per dollar + double points when using their travel site and their bonus points mall (newegg is one of the retailers listed there). The gift cards are a slightly better deal than with Citi - such as 5000 points gets you a $50 card instead of 6000 with Citi, though, Amex does not offer Amazon cards, so overall, I split my monthly spending between the two cards as well as my travel plans for breaks.

I was happy with my citibank student platinum card until they cut back the rewards without telling me. I still use it as my primary card but I'm considering switching because the rewards really stink now.

he doesn't give a damn like he said above...I think he is just trolling thinking have a CC is a big deal or something.

We really can't help him on this without knowing that.

We got a spiel from National City on Friday. They have a pretty sweet account deal. With a $250/month min autodeposit you enroll in free interest checking and savings. You get 2 points for every debit dollar spent and 5 points for every CC dollar. About 41,000 points can be turned in for $100 gift cards. Also you get 50,000 points for up to 5 account referrals per year ($600 in gift cards).

They have a 4% cash back on gas CC I will be signing up for as well.

They also have a totally free account transfer deal where they handle all the transfer of autopays and the like. Should any not be paid properly they will cover any fees.

They also do totally free atms and will refund up to $2 per transaction for out of network access fees.

They are also offering $163 cash for opening an account with the $250 monthly auto deposit.

National City was been around as National City for 163 years. There is a rating system where about 6 is the level for most top 10's like BoA and Chase,etc....National City is an 11.

I was pretty impressed.
